do guardians NEED shields? i mean if monks and stuff can tank without one but a guardian needs one then they must really suck
seems like duel weidling or 2h would get more agro

It all comes down to your play style
If you perfer more ac and decent dmg use the shield/sword combo
but If you perfer moderate/semi-high damage
but since the guardian has plenty of AC to spare the 2handed approach is reasonable

Guardians are made to be Tanks in which Mobs just bash on while the other group members kill those Mobs. Having the highest AC and HP allows the Guardian to perform his job the best. Guardians arent meant to be damage dealers in groups. If Healers see a Guardian using a 2hander or dual wield, they will ask why, because that means extra work for them along with possible down time for the group.
Also, along with using a shield, Guardians have a few shield-only special attacks they can perform. They do not have any dual-wield-only special attacks or 2hander special attacks.
Now, when im soloing, I DO use a 2hander because it has better damage output and im usually not fighting the same caliber Mobs that I do in groups.

I don't think anybody here is able to answer that yet.
no highlevel characters yet (45 plus).
nobody knows how ripostes from mobs come into play. maybe a slower 2 hander means less ripostes? ultimately less damage? as it is the case in EQ1.

In EQ1 I used a 2hs all the way to 50.
The one from lower guk with the haste... er Mitheral something or other.
I'm not sure there are ones that nice yet in EQ2, so far I'm sword and board all the way.
