Video card?!Follow

#1 Nov 23 2004 at 8:42 PM Rating: Decent
I am using a GeForce4 440 MX with 8xAGP 128mb

everytime I try to load the game, the screen turns black then goes back to my desktop with an error saying I need a video card with 4 texture units.

What is a texture unit ?

I read system reqs. on the box, and from what I read, it should work fine.

anyone know anything I don't about this ??

from the sony knowlage base.

To check the compatibility of your video card you may use our system scan utility http://everquest2.station.sony.com/systemscan/. If your video card is supported the supported driver for your card will be listed below. For instructions on how to update and install new drivers, please visit our Tech Support Installing Sound Video Drivers information. Be aware that many cards require that you properly uninstall your previous drivers before installing any new drivers. Not doing so can cause visual anomalies, system instability, and inability to render 3d properly.

I'm wondering how you managed to do this. SoE made the game so that it runs with the "need" for a 4-texture card, which the MX series is without. I too had a MX card in the older of my two systems, and it was absolutely impossible to run EQ II on that card, no matter what driver or updates I tried.

To the OP, definately look into buying a new card. I personally upgraded, since the MX series (in my experience) is not supported no matter what modification you make to the software. Regardless if you could get it to work, you'll want to upgrade up simply because with most games coming out now, they'll simply require higher standards for Video Cards anyways. There's a lot of cheap alternatives, I only spent about $60 on a nice upgrade to a Radeon 9200SE card, which is more than adequate.

well, that's nice to know, i'll be getting a new video card today, whenever i have time to take the 30minute drive to damn best buy ><

I don't care so much about other new games, I am going to either play this or continue with FFXI. thank you for the suggestions ^_~

EDIT* i tried setting it to maximum, and it still will did not work.

New Radeon 128 video cards and above work. I had the same problem. The "texture units" thing is relatively new, so only newer cards have it. I had a 256 that originally cost over $250 a year and a half ago that wouldn't work either.

I had a 64mb Geforce 2, obviously EQ2 didn't work, so I went out and bought a Radeon 9200 128mb card, and it worked ok, had it on maximum performance, but still had lag in group encounters, so I went out and bought a geforce FX 5200 256mb card, and still have to play on maximum performance but the lag is gone in groups so that is good. I understand I'm gonna have to update the rest of my system, as I'm only running a P4 1.6 with 768mb RAM and it's only PC133 RAM, so hopefully I can build up a new system, I want to see what this game really looks like so bad.

hey guys, the replies here are really useful but i do have 1 more question :-
Geforce Fx 5200/5500/5700 and the radeon 9200/9250 ... will it be able to actually work? i'm in malaysia and the cost of video cards here are really outrageous :(
if it works, den i'll be able to afford 1 as my old g4 mx440 is practically useless for EQ2

thanks for the help guys, cheers!

*edited some video card models
