Video Card 256/256??Follow

#1 Nov 21 2004 at 10:25 PM Rating: Decent
Hey, I saw someone earlier talking about their Radeon 9800Pro which was 256 ram/256 Bit and I have searched everywhere and have not been able to find even one card of any brand that is both 256 bit and 256 Ram...why is that?

I have decided on a Radeon AIW 9800 when I get my new computer on Christmas. It is 256 Bit, which I was told mattered more than the Ram?? It aslo is 8x pipeline and I figured it was the best buy for my money as it would be current enough to be safe from going obsolete for atleast a couple years.

Anyone give me the take on this? Thanks alot.

Personally I would go with the base model of the Geforce 6800. My dad has the ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 9800, and it seems blurry in EQ2 as opposed to my 6800 which is extremely clear. Also the 6800 out scored the 9800 by almost 4,000 points on 3Dmark2001 and they are the same price. I picked mine up at Bestbuy for $250, never been disappointed.

There are plenty of 256 bit cards that come with 256M of ram. Go to newegg and check.

Off the top of my head the 256 bit cards are:

9700Pro 8Pipe
9800Pro 8Pipe
9800XT 8Pipe
X800Pro 12Pipe?
X800XT 16Pipe
X800XT PE 16Pipe
FX5950 Ultra 8Pipe
6800GT 16Pipe
6800GT Ultra 16Pipe

Well, The reason I never found the 256/256 is because I was not shopping in the $400+ range. That is way too much for a video card...I am only looking to spend up to $300 tops but I noticed that several of the same card like the 9800 Pro or the GeForce 6800 have LE,SE, and other tags to them, is there any notable difference or just pick one and enjoy?

As someone posted...go to new egg, I picked up a refurbished High Tech ATI RADEON 9800PRO Video Card, 256MB GDDR2, 256-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP, Model "EXCALIBUR R9800PRO ICEQ " -RETAIL http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-161-116&depa=0 last week (it was $29 cheaper then too) and there not one bad thing i could say about it. I had a 5700 Ultra which was crap and before I got the 256 MB 9800 I went down and picked up a 6800 and it was choppy and my comp kept crashing with an error. Since I run a 128 MB 9800 Pro in my other comp, enough trial and error with the nVidia cards, I'm sold on the Radeon's. That's my 2cp.

and from what i've heard, you don't want an LE or an SE, they are too watered down if you know what I mean.

I have read/heard this as well. stay away from these. You will be very happy w/ the 9800pro or even the 9800 XT which is right around $300. if u are willing to spend that much, go with the XT, significant upgrade to the 9800 pro.

and yes, the 256 bit is much more important than the 128/256 meg comparison.
