exactly how does one scribe?

Do you need to be a certain level?

Can a summoner scribe?

The short answer is ANYBODY can craft ANYTHING. (Not the same as anyone can make everything - read on.)

Crafting is like adventuring. Eventually you have to specialize and customize your skills to fit a particular profession. In crafting, you begin as an Artisan and remain so until L10, at which time you MUST find the tradeskill registrar and tell them what of the 4 artisan profession branches you wish. I believe if your intent is to make spells, you choose Researcher. Click one of the choices and the registrar will explain it in greater detail before you commit yourself.

The ability to craft your own spells comes at L4 Artisan (approx) and works up from there. Borrowing advice from elsewhere on this forum, you want to make Tin Spikes til L4, make Tin Edges for another level or two, then start making Elm Quills, Sepia Dyes, and Sepia Ink (using the Dyes), and finally using the inks, quills, together with some papeterie paper to craft spells.

In your newbie slum, you'll find you can join a crafting guild that allows you to zone into their "workshop." Inside are all the crafting stations you need - from chemistry tables to writing desks. When spellcrafting, you'll become very familiar with chemistry, fletching (woodworking), and writing.

Crafting spells will take you to L9+, at which time you must find the tradeskill registrar for your city and tell them which choice you want in furthering your crafting. At that time, you may join one of the specialized tradeskill "societies" you find in the newbie slums of your city.

NB: You will find recipes for ALL spells eventually. Do not assume because you can craft something, you can use it. Far from the truth. If you want to know if you can use a particular item, examine it and usually there's an icon for its product. Examine the product, and it will be information exactly like examing an item on a merchant. Basically, if a product's name is red, you cannot use it - any other color is a "cons" for whether you have outgrown the item or not. The gotcha is if you see something in Sage volume 20 and you're a researcher L10, you got 10 levels to go (and a final profession of Sage to pick) before you are allowed to scribe that book. Same idea for all books - their name indicates the minimum level (and profession) required for scribing.

Once you have admission to the society specifically for you, then you'll find tradeskill books from L10-L40 (approx) for sale there.

NB: You really WANT to scribe a new tradeskill book every tradeskill "ding," as this gives you better recipes to level from. Examine a book and see if its recipes are new compared with your recipe list shown off your EQ2 "start" button. Chances are you neglected to buy the additional books for artisan, and definitely need to buy the books for the crafting profession choices you make.

Unfortunately, I've found that making my Apprentice III mage pet takes quite a bit of leveling (crafts grinding), and tradeskill crafting quests have not been quick and easy to finish. You're on your own for discovering how to afford and manage to level as suits your desires.
