Question about the economyFollow

I have little EQ and EQ2 experience but what I have seen is that the economy is very tight. After a dozen hours of play I had secured 9sp as a fighter completing quests and selling the loot. That seems low to me but it seems to be how EQ operates. So my apartment rent will come due in a couple days and that will take 5sp. No worries... but wait. I needed more bread and water so I am down in the poor house again!

Now, I don't expect anyone to tell me any secrets, but how the heck am I supposed to sustain my character? I figured I needed to start on tradeskills, but I have a long way to go before I can barely eek out a minimal profit.

I don't expect to get rich within the next year. I'd like to own a house and a horse eventually, but it looks to be impossible at this point. What am I missing?

Keep doing quests. You'll get new armor (better than what you can buy), money (from the quests and selling the loot you don't need) and a ton of XP. If you do most of the quests listed here for you level, you should come away with about 50 silver, 2 or 3 levels and some pretty nice gear. Shouldn't take more than a day.

Once you start getting some more levels, you can farm better items and there's not as much need to quest (but there's still some really nice quests you'll want to do).

Also, get a market board ASAP. Put it in your room and sell you items to other players instead of to the NPC's. You can get triple (or more) the price you'd get from the NPC's. If I'd got a market board when I first landed in Freeport, I'd have a lot more money than I have right now :) Wish I'd done it sooner.

You will make more money as you go on. I make about 8 silver just by soloing in Antonica for a couple hours. As a 14th level cleric, I fight yellow-labeled mobs and get a chest every 20 kills or so with about 30-40 seconds downtime between each kill, and a minute and a half for each fight. I sell everything I find to an NPC somewhere away from the city, and buy all my gear at city merchants. When the economy is more established and more people are selling items I need, I imagine that I will buy and sell with other players. I have not played any classes other than cleric, so I'm not sure how easy it is to solo other jobs. I find I have more than enough mana to sustain myself through one or two fights at a time, sometimes with adds (unless I mis-judge a fight and have to run away).

I would say that joining groups outside your city and getting loot that way will probably make you more money. I got about 5 silver worth of loot in an hour with a group yesterday.

EDIT: Really, listen to what the guy above me said. He's got much better ideas than I...
