Too many scouts?Follow

I've noticed when playing that I've run into so many scouts that I've been having trouble finding a balanced group. I originally picked a scout because on the IoR there were only 2 scouts, a few fighters, and almost all priests. Can anybody from the higher levels confirm this? I'd rather not play a class grouping that will be in much less demand later on.

Scouts will always be in demand for their abilities... somewhat. They provide excellent DPS and utility, but groups really, really need Priests and Fighters on a much more visceral level. You can get by without Scouts and Mages, although your performance will drop; on the other hand, trying to take out mobs without Priests or Fighters is just plain dumb.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, though. Just play what you enjoy- I never really had problems finding groups, since after the Priest(s)/Fighter the rest of the slots are slanted towards DPS, a role that Scouts are made for.

IMHO, scouts are just as important to a party as priests and fighters are. You can tank and heal all day, but if nobody is doing damage, whats the point?

Here's some figures for you:

Top melee damage (top 10 are all assassins):

Top magical damage (top 10 are all scout types:

Sustained DPS is what would matter, not one-shot.

It was meant as an example. A good scout can sustain great DPS by nailing these one shot attacks one after the other.

As a 16 predator, I can usually do the following:

Sneak -> Shadowblade
Track -> Ambush
Sneak Attack
(take a step back)
Back shot
Open Shot
And by this point Im just about ready to Sneak -> Shadowblade again.

And this is not taking into account posions, any DOT or crippling effects I throw on either.

Plus, scouts don't seem to use much power, where I've often seen mages get drained, the most I've been down to from fighting is about 1/2 power.

You can party without a scout & mage, it will just take alot longer for the mobs to go down. And hopefully it will go down before the priests run out of power.

You can party without a priest and fighter, You just better hope the mob goes down fast enough that nobody gets killed.

None of them are completely necessary for a party, you can work around not having something, and might need to change plans on what you are fighting, but a mix of all or them makes your party versatile and generally works best.

dps = damage per second.

I'm playing a scout and while I haven't compared my damage to a mage or fighter, I will agree, I never run out of power to trigger abilities. Sometimes, grouped, I look at everyone's power at the end of a huge fight and everyone is depleted but me, sitting at 65% or more. I'm level 14 and clearly I haven't got enough abilities to use, or more likely they don't cost enough power per point of damage. I'm not complaining, mind you, and I would be loath to even say that much if it anyone from SOE even looked at these boards.

There are fewer scouts than any class at every level, so it isn't that there are too many looking for groups - more likely fewer groups realize that a scout is a contributing member to the group. Tracking, chest disarm, good positional damage, not even mentioning group invis and evac at later levels.

edit: skills are at apprentice II power levels. I should have Adept I skill upgrades but at the drop rate I have seen, it's gonna be a while...

edit2: OK i bought adept 1 quick strike :( 20sp...

Have you upgraded your skills? I was under the impression skills cost more when upgraded, but I have noticed also that as a scout I have never been lower than 3/4 of my power but I have no upgraded skills as of yet.

I have all my skills upgraded to AppIII and I never run out of power either, I just think the scout skills must cost less than the heals and nukes. I'm always worried that someone's going to look at my bar at the end of a hard fight where everyone is out of power and say "hey, weren't you doing anything??"

I certainly hope there aren't too many scouts, because that's the first character I created and she is really fun so far. My husband made a shaman type. We duo pretty well at our low levels, but I'm going to make a tank also, which will probably be an easier combo as we level up.

in EQ, caster/nuker and scout/ranger/rogue are dps. scout have skill can lower their mobs hate level so scout can keep stab on mobs @ss without getting any hit. I donno if caster has similar skill. but so far what I saw was if a caster/nuker nuke the mob before/after the fighter/taunter taunt it, the mob will turn to the caster 80% of the time. and of course caster will yell for heal or running in circle. but I didnt have that kinda problem( I am a scout/bard). maybe I am just a buff'er not like rogues with high dps.
so I think scout is a pretty good dps and dont really need much heal from priest.
