EQ Completely freezing my compFollow

#1 Nov 18 2004 at 9:24 AM Rating: Decent
Just as the subject says, every now and then I will be playing the game fine and it will just completely lock up and freeze EVERYTHING. I cant go to desktop, ctr+alt+delete, alt+tab, nothing what so ever. I usually run the game on high performance as my setup isnt the best. Any suggestions on what might be the problem? Or better yet, how to fix it lol? I am running almost the bare essentials. 512mb ram, Radeon 9000w/64mb of ram and so on. Any help/suggestions are appreciated, thanks!!

First thing I would recommend is checking all your drivers... make sure you have the latest and most up to date. Also, check the windows updates for any criticals... usually doesn't matter, bu every little bit helps. Clear temp file and run disk cleanup... run disk defrag...

Above and beyond those things, you may end up having to go through and make sure there arn't any more options to turn off... it's borderline too much for those specs.

Also, try lookign through the tech board on the offical forums... lot of good help there.

i see you have a Radeon card. These cards tend to need a little more juice, especially when they are running high end applications. I would suggest going into bios and finding your AGP settings and turn the voltage up to 1.6v. you may find this helps with stability (assuming its not a software or ram issue). best of luck.

I have the same video card, but I have 768 megs of ram. I have yet to freeze or crash in the game. (knock wood) So maybe more ram would help?

Your Issue is just a RAM issue. Even with totally gimped settings this game runs like it wants to use around 600MB of RAM So if you dont have a enough RAM to support that. The comp is having to access your Hard Drive more inturn Slowing you down. and Sometimes freezing you up.

I was crashing quite a bit when I had just got it. Tried a lot of things before finding out it was a heat issue. I brought in a 8" fan and left my case open with the fan blowing on it and I haven't had an issue since. So, check your video card after the crash - is it really hot to the touch? If so, mega-fan.

Thank you everyone for the replies. It all comes down to my broke *** forking over the money to get some half way decent gear to run this game lol. I am not very computer savvy at all so I dont wanna try anything I could, and probably will ***** it. I will try the fan 1st and turn the settings down even more. If that doesnt work I guess Best Buy is gonna get a visit :p Thanks again for the info and suggestions.!

The mega-fan rules. I did that with my PS2 a couple of years ago when the fan broke down. It worked wonders. Are your fans actually running? Mine weren't a couple of years ago, and I had to get a completely new Motherboard to solve the problem. Considering you may be cheap like me, but unlike me, your computer may not be under warranty, the mega-fan is a great alternative. Make sure your case is full-open while you do it, too. I think my next project is going to be a mini-fridge computer. With beer in it. Awesome.

Also, RAM is cheap, and you need more of it. The more RAM, the better. You can never have too much. Not just in EQ2, but in everything. I just got an additional DDR 512 MB for about 60 bucks at best buy (mail-in rebate), and not only does EQ run smoothly, but everything is much faster now, from internet stuff to word processing, to movies. Get more.

EDIT: The RAM is probably still on sale for the rest of the week, so if you need it, decide quick.
