ProblemFollow

Every time I open up EQ(click the desktop icon) and enter my password there is an update. It updates the same files every time I try to play.

On top of that, once I hit play the music starts then some stuff flashes by(Nvidia, Dell, etc.). Some stuff starts downloading off in the lower righthand corner. Once that is done it just goes poof and I'm returned to the desktop. I cannot play the game.

Also, over the PLAY button it always says Character Selection Unavailable.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I don't know of a "problem" Every time you start EQ it launches the updater. Every time that starts it SCANS your files, all of them (in your eq2 directory). Any time you see a % count that is the internal file scan NOT a download. When you are downloading files you see "X time remaining".

The selection above that, you actually have to click on it and select your character - it's just a quick select so you bypass the character creation screen.

When the game is loading, the bar on the bottom right is the progress bar of the zone/characters/environment/etc loading. Again NOTHING is being downloaded there.

True, I would suggest, first doing a complete file scan.

The option for that is right off of the launcher window. Just below the progress bar is a button that (I think) says "View Updates" or something. Click that, and in the window that pops up there is a file scan button. Click that. The file scan may take a little longer than the quick one done before and updates, but it SHOULD find and fix and problems associated with the files and/or caching.

If that does not work, contact SOE tech support.

If you're not getting any error windows when it closes (ie. Graphics BS, bla bla) but you're getting to the screen where it starts to load the environments and entities, and then crashing...then definately first do a full file scan at the start (should have the option where you normally hit "Play" after you accept the usual agreement).

If that isn't working, sounds like you might need a full re-install of the software. It's too bad that SOE didn't include a independant EQ II Config program (like SE did with FFXI) that gathers your system info to help resolve hardware issues.
