First, I want to say I am pretty ignorant when it comes to computer hardware. That being said I have a GeForce 4 MX integrated GPU that i guess acts as a video card. I understand that the Geforce 4 MX is not compatible with eq2. Knowing this I went and took a gander at video cards that i could buy as an upgrade. While doing this I decided i better take a look inside my computer to see where it would go and discovered that the integrated part of the geforce4 mx integrated GPU means that the video card is actually part of the mother board. What I want to know is if this means I am SoL and have to buy a new machine or are there any ways to upgrade my video card?

Hopefully, this makes sense and feel free to flame away cause I deserve it for being too stupid to check out what exactly I was buying.

I'm pretty sure that you will have to replace both if you want to replace the video card. You don't have to buy a new machine, that I am sure of, but I think you might have to replace both the motherboard and the videocard if you want to upgrade

EDIT: Fixed spelling

Sigh, i hope it's not the case because I can afford a new video card but not sure i can afford both at the moment. Oh well, looks like i might have to settle for WoW.

NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!! ALL MAY NOT BE LOST!!!!!

First off, do you know the make and model of your motherboard? Second, most boards that have been made in the past three years have a AGP slot built into them just so you can upgrade. And last, should your board have the required AGP slot what is your budget for a new video card? (Though you can still get a PCI video card, they suck comparatively)

Once you decide what kind of budget you have for a card, you can go to newegg.com and find really good deals. Or pricewatch.com for even better ones, though on price watch you have a chance of getting ripped off.

Post you budget, and I or someone else can give you advice on the card you can get. I use to custom build computers for people till I got too busy with my current job.

You can even pm me if you want help. I'm always glad to educate people about computers to help them understand things. Mostly because I hate how the larger companies, not mentioning any names (ahem emachine, dell, etc.) like to keep the computer ignorant in the dark.

Yup, there is an AGP slot and I am feeling better already. My budget is about 100 bucks at the maximum. I greatly appreciate the help. I have been researching solutions myself and already consider myself infinitely more educated about this area of computer hardware. This should keep me from getting duped so easily next time, but, unfortunately, I am a slow learner.

100 bucks is a little on the low side for a good gaming card. But nor imposable to work with. Do you have a prefrence, ATI of Nvidia(GeForce)?

here is a newegg link that will give you an idea of what you can get for 100.00 and under,

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=property&catalog=48&propertycodevalue=0,%200,%200,%200,%200,%200,%200,%200,%200,%200&minprice=&maxprice=100.00&mfrcode=0&DEPA=1&Order=priceD

And what ever you get make sure it is an AGP card not a PCI Express. Your board will not run a PCI Express card.

Also, here is a link to EQ2's supported video cards. Be sure to pick one that is in the list. Stay away from the GeForce 4 and lower cards.

No problem Ascended, unless you are up to your elbows in the guts of computer like I am every day. You really can't be expected to remember every little detail.

It looks good for an FX5200. The only thing I don't like about it is that no manufacturer is listed. Which means no decent support. Try this one.

Ascended, Your card is better then mine. So you should be able to play, but at reduced video setting like I will have to use.

I think i am going to go with the one Ascended listed. I now realize it's better to pay a little more cash for a higher quality item instead of regretting my decision later on. Thanks for all the info guys. I'll see you in game, hopefully, very soon.

You should always get the best that you can afford. Otherwise the games will out pace your video capabilities much too fast. So yes, Ascended's pick is better to go with.
