And thanks for clarifying that adept 1 is dropped.

I don't think the IV's are in the game yet, although we assume that they'll be quested.

Check out this post from a few days ago regarding spell info. There's some good info on where to find the spells.

The next spell level is always better than the previous one. The list goes:

Apprentice I
Apprentice II
Apprentice III
Adept I
Adept II
Adept III
Master I
Master II
Master III

Now I'm not sure if those are the only levels. I have heard of a Master IV version of the spell. I don't recall where I heard that or if its in-game. Maybe it was in beta or a rumor? If anyone knows please correct me.

But yes, each level down is stronger than the previous level and going from one tier (Apprentice) to another (Adept/Master) gives more bonuses than getting the stronger version of the same tier (going from I to II or III).

Edit: Lewskinslayer's link is a great thread. I recommend reading it. I should have just grabbed the info from there instead of typing it up myself >_<

The "grade" of a spell acts as a modifier to your effective level, for casting purposes. There are four grades to each catagory (Apprentice, Adept, and Master) but not all of them are in the game yet. If you have the Apprentice I version in your Book, you can scribe any better versions you acquire. There are no level prerequisites for upgrades.

Apprentice I = level-1 (granted automatically, except for the "fun" spells with purely cosmetic effects)
Apprentice II = baseline (storebought)
Apprentice III = level+1 (crafted from common harvests)
Apprentice IV = level+2 (not yet in game. Quested?)
Adept I = level+3 (uncommon drop)
Adept II = level+4 (not yet in game. Harder quest?)
Adept III = level+5 (crafted from rare harvests, recipes are in uncommon dropped books)
Adept IV = level+6 (not yet in game. Long, difficult quest?)
Master I = level+7 (rare drop or character advancement choice)
Master II = level+8 (not yet in game. Very hard and insanely long quest?)
Master III = level+9 (crafted from very rare drops, recipes are in rare dropped books)
Master IV = level+10 (ultra-rare drop or awarded by GM. Artifact rarity of around one per server. Not hard-limited to just one in existence, but don't expect to ever own one of these)

So, using a Master I version, you cast that spell as if you were seven levels higher than you really are. The devs balanced the game around the assumption that everyone would have App.3 spells. If you're using better, that's just gravy. Do not expect to upgrade ALL of your spells to Adepts or Masters. If you get even half of them beyond Apprentice grade, you're doing very well.

What level can you start using Adept I spells???

I am level 12 and tried buying Adept 1 spells last night off of a broker and after examing the spells they stated that I was not high enough skill to use them?

Is it a level thing or a skill (like divination) thing?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

Have you got anything to backup the whole IV versions. I'm just curious. I'd like to know why they would put in a 4th level after you already can get the 1st level of the second tier. Seems a bit odd to me is all.

Is this just something you heard?

Its in the instruction manual, page 86.

"There are three major ranks: Apprenctice, Adept, and Master. Each rank represents a significant increaes in potency and Power cost for the spell or combat art, and the relative rarity of the scroll. Apprentice scrolls are common, Adepts are uncommon, and Masters are rare.

Within each rank there are four grades, I through IV. Each represent a slight increase in potency over the previous grade, within the rank. Grade I is a general reward for new levels and defeating enemies. Grade II is found in shops. Grade III is available through tradeskill crafting. Grade IV is available through questing."

See it pays to read the manual :)

Cool, but still what is the point?

App IV will presumably not be more powerful than Adept I.

So I guess I just don't see why is all.

You make a new character and come accross ann appVI before an adept I. They bring new class's into the game, either as subclasses, or a whole new basic class. In which case you'll make a new char and may come accross a quest for an appVI before adept I.

Or quite possibly it is pointless to go after an appVI, but quite resonable to go after adeptVI. Just having the appVI rounds out the whole I-VI system so its consistent.
