READ ME, FIGHTER CLASS QUESTIONSFollow

#1 Nov 16 2004 at 8:58 PM Rating: Decent
ok, im a kerra, on the Good side. Course i chose good because in EQ1, i was an evil ogre, with no other alts. i am a fighter, and now i need to decide which class to go. I'm interested in being a berserker, because in EQ1 i was a 65 shaman (priest class), in Final Fantasy XII a thief (scout class), and now i just want to be a pure melee guy. Berserker appealed to me. They wear heavy gear which ive never had being a shaman (eq1) and thief (ffxi), and that berserkers do pure melee damage. I don't feel like being a mage type yet until later. But in any case, I'm ranting.....

Here's my dilemma:

I wanted to be a berserker, assuming they were just DPS (damaging) class, but I was told they were "just tanks who do more damage". Guardians are better tanks. I don't want to be a tank, if so, I'd be a guardian. Then I thought about monk (though i really wanted to use weapons and wear heavy gear) and I wanted to know if they do more damage than berserkers. If that's the case, what's the point of a berserker.

So....what are the advantages of being a berserker? Am i just a crappy "in between" class? Are people always going to invite another class over me because I'm not the greatest tank nor the greatest DPS? Remember I'm on good side, so i can't be bruiser, only monk.

Next question, what are the advantages of a paladin? Are they just like in EQ1? Are they tanks? Are they dps with heals? I'm lost!!!! :(

Please answer both questions if u can. If a berserker is a crappy in between class, I don't want to be it. Though if they are efficient players that groups would love to have, then im for it.

I don't know much about Berserker. I, myself, am aspiring to be a Guardian. Yet I think it's a trivial thing to outfit yourself to be a DD type. If the fighter archetype is anywhere as versatile as the FFXI Warrior, then you shouldn't have a problem in becoming a DD Berserker with the right equips.

Same thing here, not too knowledgeable on this class. However, from the description, it's similar to the Paladin job in FFXI, which is my main there. Main hate tool would most likely be damage mitigation (heavy armor, curative spells, etc).

From the descriptions, Guardians are suppose to wear the heaviest armor. But we'll see.

I don't think Berserker is a crappy inbetween. I think it's more of a highly versatile middle, whether you want to do damage or take damage. I don't know any Berserker focused combat arts there are, but I'm pretty sure that you'll have a nice assortment of offensive ones (I mean, Berserker just says "beat things up.") and if you focus on upgrading your fighter/warrior arts that are offensive based, then I'm sure you can tailor your character to how you want him.

All fighters are tanks. Even the monk/bruisers. All fighters can tank equally as well (though, you might have to think outside the box to figure out how. :) )

Let me put it this way. Berserkers and guardians are the same until 20. And, unless they remove skills after you get your sub-class, berserkers can wear heavy armor, and use the biggest shields. Sub-class is just flavor, or, how the person gets things done. Guardians tank by having the best defense. Paladin have decent armor, lay-on hands, and more defensive skills. Monks have (at least one) heals and highers evades. Berserkers, SKs, and Bruisers are just like their opposing sub-class, but with more emphisis on damage than defense. For example, paladins get lay on hands, and blessed aid, heals. SKs, get Harm Touch and Grim Coil (damage). Guardians get Sentinal and Alay (takes a hit for an ally), and berserkers get Berserk and Blood Rage (damage).

But, as I said, according to SOE, all fighters can tank equally as well. It just comes down to flavor.

If you don't want to be a tank, then I'd take what Ryuke said to heart. If you play any of the fighter archtype subclasses, people will expect you to tank.

One piece of advice from me, be very careful trying to reduce any archtype or class to bare stats... In other words, don't think that just because a Beserker in in between a Guardian and a Monk in terms or damage that a Beserker is thus "worthless" because he's not the highest DPS or the highest AC.

Min/Maxing = Evil. :)

All of the subclasses do things differently... One way may suit you better than another regardless of numbers. Play what you feel like playing rather than what you think is going to be a statistical powerhouse, because often I've noticed that people who only play a class for the stats doesn't enjoy it or play to their full potential.
