Server within Server?!?! WTFFollow

#1 Nov 15 2004 at 6:09 PM Rating: Good
What's with this? Me and my Wife both log onto Everfrost Server, yet she's in Qeynos 10 and I'm in Qeynos 4!?!?! I can't find her, see her, we can /tell but don't show in the same area. What the hell kinda joke is this? So is it server within server? Someone please explain this to me ><

Load balance :)

When Qeynos1 gets full then they create number 2 and so on.

At least that is my impression. I've noticed other zones do it too, never seen a number 10 though! Only seen up to 4.

When a zone gets enough people into it they create another instance of the zone so that it doens't get too crowded. When you click on the door or mariner bell or whatever you are using to enter that zone a list should pop up listing what ones are available at the time. Just pick the same one, and you will be able to play with your wife.

I'm not sure what other games use this but I first saw it in City of Heroes. It should help with cut down with lag beacuse there won't be so many people in one spot at the same time, and if you go into a zone to kill specific mobs and someone else is there camping them already you can just try another version of the zone and maybe you'll have better luck. As far as I can tell they only did it with the outdoor and dungeon type zones, everyone seems to zone into the same city areas.

One of you just exit the zone and go into the one the other is in. From then on always make sure you chose the same one. It's simplest to just agree "Always take the highest numbered instance" or "Always take the lowest numbered instance". (It's called "instancing" BTW, it's goal is to NOT have 200 people in one zone... spread them out over 5 copies so nobody is lagged out of existance by all the other PC's.

Don't panic...the game has provided a way of joining up with your friends. If you are still on Island of Refuge go to the second wharf and right click on Bell. You'll be able to type in the name of the person you want to join.

It's called "instancing" - and it's to reduce the the amount of people trying to camp the same thing all at once. That way instead of 100 people being xyz zone, you have 20 people in each different instance :-). I haven't done it yet but I understand you can use the mariner bells in the zones to get to the same "instance" as whoever you are trying to reach.

I'm from ffxi and really i dont understand the whole concept of instances. FFXI never needed them and they had like a total of 1.5 million people throughout world playing the game. But they did have a ton more servers. I personally think instances are sort of stupid but w/e thats just my opinion.

FFXI actually uses "instancing", except they call it "battlefields" and its only used in certain situations.
EQ2 was more liberal with its use of instancing.

Have you ever wondered how come several groups can fight the same BCNM at the same time, yet they dont see or affect each other?
If the BCNM fights are not instanced, then your group will have to wait in line until the first group finishes, or all groups will be all in the same circle fighting in the same battlefield.

Yeah but you aren't looking for parties in the middle of a boss fight. Unless I am mistaken if you want to party in EQ2 and do /ooc lfg. that only works in that instance, so you have to go to every instance untill someone invites you. Is that not correct?

In my opinion, FFXI could really use instanced zones. The over-crowding of both Named Mobs and camps for Exp Parties is a huge problem.

I just think about how many times I've lost claim on a mob, or getting really bad exp because our puller was competing against 3 others. Situations like that become much more bearable when you have instanced zones.

One way around not being able to find a group in a particular instance might be by using the LFG tool. I have yet to play with it, dunno if groups have a "Looking for more" setting or not.

So far, I kinda like the instancing. Less crowded. The only issue I have with it is that it's difficult to tell what instance you're actually in (I guess I could do a /who sorish all, or some variation). The instance number doesn't show up when you bring up the map (the text is too long for the space given).

Best way to tell what "instance" you are in is to bring up map and it will be listed on top bar.

another thing is to do a search by the /who all lfg and so on happened to me other day. Got a tell from antonica 4 while i was in antonica.

strange....

I see the potential of this causing issues unless you're allowed to "change your instance". GuildWars allows you to do this.. even if you're currently in an instance you can select one to enter and then you're set...

so, is there a way to change your instance other than leaving a zone and coming back?

You can change your instance, go to a zone line door/bell and right click on it to find the option.

Instancing is a great idea.

It worked wonders for City of Heros.

I'm happy to see that they decided to instance zones.
