Trying to understand spellsFollow

#1 Nov 15 2004 at 4:40 PM Rating: Decent
I am getting the game on friday. I have been to a few of the boards and i am trying to figure out how the spells work. From what I can tell each spell has 3 diffrent levs and then 4 more classes in each lev. So will I be buying each spell 12 times?

No you could skip levels of spells, like buying app3 and not app2.

If I understand it correctly the scrolls up the level of your spell of which when you first get from basic leveling is basically underpowered to the point of like one level. So apprentice II kinda brings it up to being your level spell following the rules of:

Apprentice I(spell gained from leveling: -1
Apprentice II: -0
Apprentice III: +1
Adept I: +2
Adept II: +3
Adept III: +4
Masters(forget if thats right name) I: +5

and kinda goes on in that fashion I think it is.

Also,

All 'I' abilities are dropped from monsters.

All 'II' abilities are sold by NPCs.

All 'III' abilities are crafted by PCs.

Not exactly.

The "grade" of a spell acts as a modifier to your effective level, for casting purposes. There are four grades to each catagory (Apprentice, Adept, and Master) but not all of them are in the game yet. If you have the Apprentice I version in your Book, you can scribe any better versions you acquire. There are no level prerequisites for upgrades.

Apprentice I = level-1 (granted automatically, except for the "fun" spells with purely cosmetic effects)
Apprentice II = baseline (storebought)
Apprentice III = level+1 (crafted from common harvests)
Apprentice IV = level+2 (not yet in game. Quested?)
Adept I = level+3 (uncommon drop)
Adept II = level+4 (not yet in game. Harder quest?)
Adept III = level+5 (crafted from rare harvests, recipes are in uncommon dropped books)
Adept IV = level+6 (not yet in game. Long, difficult quest?)
Master I = level+7 (rare drop or character advancement choice)
Master II = level+8 (not yet in game. Very hard and insanely long quest?)
Master III = level+9 (crafted from very rare drops, recipes are in rare dropped books)
Master IV = level+10 (ultra-rare drop. Artifact rarity of around one per server. Not hard-limited to just one in existence, but don't expect to ever own one of these)

So, using a Master I version, you cast that spell as if you were seven levels higher than you really are. The devs balanced the game around the assumption that everyone would have App.3 spells. If you're using better, that's just gravy. Do not expect to upgrade ALL of your spells to Adepts or Masters. If you get even half of them beyond Apprentice grade, you're doing very well.

In talking with a friend of mine whose a bit higher level than me (he's high teens), he related to me that you >can< succeed with just the APP I version of your spells but, if you get a real hankering to upgrade, then it makes more sense to go from APP I to APP III, bypassing APP II entirely. For my Mage, APP II spells are around 1.5sp while APP III are around 2.5sp (your results may vary a bit) though the market will probably bring down the price of APP III a bit as more players become capably of making them.

Since I've not had any luck finding APP IIIs for me (so far), I can say that I've been happy with the results of upgrading my single target nuke and my mana regen spells from I to II.

As far as drops......good luck. I've had one Alchemy book drop for me in almost 11 levels of hunting so I'm guessing the drop rate is very, very low ATM.
