Traps on ChestsFollow

#1 Nov 15 2004 at 3:20 PM Rating: Decent
Hi All,

Anyone know what kind of odds there are for insta-death when bashing open a chest when you are older, considering you have the HPs of a warrior?

Has anyone noticed if the odds are worth the items found inside the chests?

If I dont have someoen that can open it in the group I go for it, you never know what's inside.

YOU are hit by a deadly trap for 730 points of heat damage.

Level 18 warrior, I was half life when i opened it, could of survived if i was full life.

I asked this question because I play with a crazy mage friend that died the first time he tried to open a chest. Now he never lets me open them because he is afraid of one of us dying. I have been trying to convince him that the odds of outright death are low, especially if I open it, because I have twice the HPs he does.

It's rather funny because this same crazy mage friend loves to pull things that are 4 levels higher than we are and we risk death more often doing that!

Just open the chests unless you have a scout type in the group that can disarm it. Chances of death are relatively low and rewards are usually pretty good. My most entertaining chest experiance was by a friend. Opened it under water and got stunned. He drowned :D

I opened that one too on noob isle. My friend and I were doing the shark killing quest - just so happened I had EB from the statue still up, he did not - he barely made it out of the water like a tick from dieing.

I was solo'n avengers orc skels yesterday and I was getting a large number of chest drops. I'm a warrior so yeah... sure....in the green I should have no troubles opening them.
WRONG lol. I took 2 Ice trap damages from one chest that killed me instantly. I love it cause I was sitting there unconscious (not sure how) for a few moments before death took me and I was able to loot the item out of the chest. I don't know it just made me chuckle. This game is sick fun :P Eventually my boss will notice my workload is down and I'm sitting here on forums all day :P

The strongest trap I've seen or seen anyone talk about is the Deadly Trap. This trap isn't strong enough to kill you if you're full health, it will take you down to 1hp. Moral of the story. Don't open a chest unless you're full health.

Stunned and drowned in the water.. Now that is hilarious. I have died opening a chest too. I killed Bladefin solo, after the fight I swam right down and opened without regening a bit. It killed me. Smiley: laugh

I know better now. Regen then open.

In a group, make sure the loot option for the group is set to "lotto" and then have the rogue/scout/whatever-has-disarm do the honors.

The only trap I got it with so far in 8 levels was on the IoR... some sort of disease trap that filled my screen with green balls of fuzzy stuff and slowed me down.

Guaranteed that my troll fighter kills the entire group at some point before I learn not to open chests (I've only solo'd so far up through level 8). Hopefully, we'll all have a good laugh and I'll learn not to do that anymore.

Another tip on chests. Always try to disarm. The loot that drops from a disarmed chest is always better then one that's been triggered or bashed open.

Just a note on this. If a rogues disarms skill is not high enought the option will not be displayed. I right clicked on a chest last night to disarm. Nothing was there so i just opened it and entire group got poisened or something.

The odds are fairly small of death from a chest. Just make sure you are at FULL health and not going to engage in combat any time soon.

I have seen a lot of damage types, but have never died when I was at full health. We did have one group memeber open a chest thinking they could grab the loot in a fight only to paralize the entire group for a while. :(

I got hit with a double whammy last night and it knocked me unconscious. I was able to loot the item, and even stand back up when my HP came back.

I laughed so hard last night. A proest and I killed a random sawtooth. I was at full health or very near. He passed on chest, I opened. Insta-death LMAO. Then about 5 minutes later we killed Bladefin and he opened chest, we were both knocked unconcious and both drowned right there. LMAO X 2.

I was mad but I so could not keep myself from just laughing it off.

I'm so trying not to use the web to get hints and walkthroughs. I avoid threads that might be spoilers of where I am, so I didn't know about this:

I was just too highly amused last night.
On the Isle, lvl 4 Priest, and I saw a supply chest. And it wanted me to attack it. It begged me to attack it. So I did. And it healed itself before I could do signifigant damage. I came back later, at lvl 5, and Smited the heck out of it. Same thing. Came back at lvl 6+ and FINALLY Smited it open. There was nothing in it! I was amused. All that curiosity for nothing.

And yes, I'm the same one who begs to open the chests in the LDoNs on EQ1.

those chests are treated as NPCs for the mage hallmark quests on IoR. when they bust open they spawn a supply runner.

also, a good rule to follow is as mentioned above. never open a chest unless everyone in group is full health. you follow that rule and noone should die (unless like mentioned you get stunned under water or something).

my mage opened a chest last night. she had 128 of 129 HPs and it knocked her unconscious. 30 seconds later she popped back up barely cheating death. had I been 1 HP lower she would have died. but opening a chest in a group can effect everyone in group, and theres nothing worse than opening a chest that kills the tank or cleric because you bashed it while they were low on health.

I'm wondering if there isn't some sort of code in to keep people from dying outright, at least in the lower levels. Seems like an awful lot of people are going to 1 HP on these traps.

I do not doubt this is the case, but just because you see disarm doesn't mean you won't set off the trap (as of the latest patch). I have tried to disarm 2 of them today and both times I set off the trap. Suxx0r.

What is all this trap blowing up on you busniess I dont know any.... waaait I can disarm yep shuuure is nice :-P
#23 Nov 18 2004 at 5:56 PM Rating: Decent
The nice thing is even if you get killed trying to open your chest, you still have 5 minutes to get back to it and claim it before it is open for other players to loot. And once the chest has been opened the trap is dead. Even better you have to go back anyway to retrieve your soul shard. Of course some people may not want to, but I wouldn't see why. hehe.

If I'm not on my predator, I always heal myself up before opening a chest. When I am in a pickup group there is usually some quick greedy ******* (yes I am a greedy ******* too just not a quick one) who gets it first, blowing us all to hell.

I'd rather be blown up than heavily burdoned for 15 min in the far outskirts of commonlands surrounded by roaming orange mobs.
