Housing? What's the point?Follow

#1 Nov 13 2004 at 7:31 PM Rating: Decent
I may be missing something here, but what exactly is the point of housing if all you can put in it is furniture? It seems that apartments are completely pointless. Can someone clue me in on what I'm missing? Because if the only point of housing is to have a place to stash furniture, I'll just let my rent run out since everything of value is in the bank.

From what i've heard it is one of SOE's many ways of getting you to not have a lot of money, a money sink so that everything isn't valued in kpp's

I, too, have wondered about this. I see no point to it. Sure SOE wants it to be a money sink, but if there is no game play benefit to going beyond the basic apartment, then many people won't.

Sure from an RP standpoint it could be worthwhile. And my 12 year old son thinks its really cool that he can change the finish on the walls, but beyond that........ /shrug

I suppose if there was some prestige benefit in game perhaps that I don't know about.

I am not positive but I think that you need to be in your apartment to sell/bazaar items. So there is not much incentive to go farther than the basic apartment, but it is still needed.

Aye, you are correct Sign. You need an establishment if you wish to pedal your wares, as there is no bazaar in the game. Not to mention you can use your housing to store more gear as well, versus what you have in the bank (unless that feature was scrapped, but that was one thing SOE was touting the benefits about having a house).

I think I read that your supposed to be able to get some crafting tools in your house that you can use which could make your home kinda helpful.

yeah i also thought of that .. i mean whats the point in housing ! i hope SOE give us or explain clearly what is it for !

I haven't seen the housing in EQ2 yet (I'm still on outcast isle), but if its like the SWG housing then I'll be playing alot more WoW this coming year. I hated how they turned all hunting places into suburbs.

Well if they are smart, they will do what Horizon's did for their housing. They a made a seperate zone strictly for housing. You zone in and you see a vast rolling hill landscape, complete with trees and paths. As you stroll further, you see foundation markers for a piece of land to purchase where you build it from the ground up. You (and your friends if they wished to help) would go out to collect materials to build your establishment (or you could buy them from a craftsman). It was very well done.

What I know about housing so far:

Housing is INSTANCED. Other players will not see your houses. They will all enter through the same door, but zone into their respective houses. You cannot place free-standing houses anywhere. Because of this, hunting places will not turn into housing projects (phew).

You can control who has access to your house. This is the only way other players will be able to see your house, because of the instancing system. I do not recall if you can make housing public and available for all players to enter.

Housing allows you to place items up for sale EQ1 bazaar-style.

Housing allows for different types of furniture to be placed. I assume SOE has flexibility as to what the furniture does. Something like crafting stations, or furniture that can store items. Just some ideas.

I have yet to see it to prove this, but it was said originally that there would be free-standing guild halls that your guild could purchase and upkeep if they had a certain number of status. Performing guild quests will give your guild xp and status. There are a limited number of these halls available!

I dont see the ability to store gear, was it nerfed?

Does it need to have a point? Its just a fun thing to have. Some people derive enjoyment from decorating for instance. And I expect it will become a crafting hub for players.

Its a place I can store my Dragon. Good enuf for me

you have to have a house to sell stuff on your "bulletin board". also, to have pets o.O lol.. and you can invite guests over.. and have a party! XD ... plus what would life be like in EQ2 without a home? :\ i dont like being a bum, even thou my card board box seems confy at times.. >.> so in EQ2 I WILL NOT BE A BUM! I will live in an apartment and somehow get 5 more silver by the end of the week to pay for it! Woot!

Housing is something alot of the old UO players (some FF) really enjoyed. Personally I never got it, but the first question one of my friends that played UO asked me when I was telling him about EQ2 is "does it have player housing?"

Ya, not for everyone, but some people really like it. Its just something to do.
When you get down to the knit and gritty, what purpose does most of the game have? Nothing, just do it and enjoy what you can do.

Am I clear in that you needed to pay an extra $30 to get a dragon for your house? Something that exists in an instanced virtual zone that basically only you will see?

I see no point in having instanced living quarters. I liked the eq1 bazaar system of buying and selling better because I didn't have to zone to buy from a trader once I found gear I wanted. I see no point in decorating my 'house' for my own personal enjoyment unless I get to the point that I simply don't care how I spend my money in game. The only time I am in my 'house' is when I am /afk selling. What is the point of making it look pretty for the people that come buy from me?

Unless I am missing cocktail parties going on in instanced housing...? That I might be interested in.

well after getting to Quenos I'm looking at the housing as a bit of a cash taker..

and right now I need every cent I can get for gear and items.. soooooooo once I get citizenship.. I may ditch the house for a little while until money-making is a no-brainer.

but still I'm also of the opinion of.. why have a house? or apt. for that matter. it's not like houses in SWG where you would literally accumulate so much stuff for professions and things (especially entertainers) that you needed a house for it all..

currently in EQ2 I have a table, painting, and a chandiler... but I can't store crafting items and stuff here, only option for *useful* items is in the bank.. :-\ feh...

also the price of the apartment.. 7 silver a week.. O_O wow.. umm ouch.. not happening right now.

Dont You Have To Have A House To Be Citizen In Your Respected Town? They Should Stop All The Non-Rent Paying Fools At The Gates In My Opinion =) Besides, Dont We Want To Pay Our Taxes Like Good Sheep?

hey. I sold my measly crappy house - which was more like a box actually.... and me and 2 of my friends are sharing a house lol! We're poor, and it seems like a good idea, and now we can have some place to drink that damned good rust brew ale from the Scale Yard... <_<;;;;;;;;

I think the point is to establish the code so that in the future they can come up with some crap - it could also serve as a semi private meeting place. 6 days from launch is not enough time to determin what all the hit you can do with **** is. Crap the battle system has yet to be fully mastered much less the world.

It seems to me to be a good way to fight lag. I came from ffxi, and I sometimes couldn't believe the lag in the areas where there were 300 characters sitting around in bazaar mode. EQ2 is laggy enough without mules adding to it.

Ok i would just like to point out that you all have not look at all the furniture yet.. There are these little things called strong boxes which crafters can make.. right now my friend is going to make furniture. He pointed out that these strong boxes have a weight of 100 and store up to 8 items. Right now he's just been putting them in the bank.. But i was wondering if you can place them in your house and use them as storage? has any one tryed this yet? ill have to poke him tonight when i get home from work and see if they can be placed.

Edit: Ps: im pretty shure like FF XI that house's will do something eventually.. Just not shure what yet..

Personally I don't mind the house probably be a money sink in the short term but there has to be some reason for it in the long term... I could move out and be homeless but I would rather not.
#25 Nov 15 2004 at 10:37 AM Rating: Decent
Currently a strong box can only be placed in the bank. Give them time and you will be able to store stuff in your house other then furniture. I will keep my house for a home for my dragon and to sell stuff. Its not that hard to make 5 silver to pay for it. At some point i will probobly upgrade just to say i have a better place.

Think I heard elsewhere that if you can't manage the rent for a few real-life months that it has a cap of only a few silver (a week's worth of rent?). So until you pay your (cheap) rent bill, you're just locked out of the house for a bit (no loss of items).

I kept mine, did the basic quest to get the mirror, table, chandelier... and put the Freeport book on the table. Whether I'll have 5sp at the end of the week for rent is a bridge that my troll will cross when he gets to it.
