EQ2 Video CardFollow

OK y'all. SOE has won the battle. They're got me wanting to buy a better Vid card. I know its a conspiracy.

Right now my box has this:
Athlon XP2000 (1.6Ghz)
1 Gig RAM
Nvidia FX5600

My l337 computer friends laugh when I tell them I have an FX series video card. I've noticed that EQ2 runs pretty choppy, and I've been looking at a new card anyways.

Now before you go and say this, let me point out: I KNOW that EQ2 is designed with future hardware in mind. That being said, I've got my credit card in my hot little hand, NewEgg.com is in my sights, and as long as the wife doesn't find out, I'm getting something new.

What video card will rock EQ2 at the moment? SOE has "runs great with Nvidia" plastered all over their website and ads. I know this is probably just politics. What should I consider? I'm no slouch at building and installing hardware, but I haven't upgraded for a while. Any of you hardware junkies have some insight? Thanks all.

Well sure Nvidia would run great but the newest Nvidea card is well.. a hefty sum... I would suggest the second best thing which is the radeon X800. I have one being shipped here on tuesday. The reason i know it runs well is because a friend of mine with an almost identical PC, runs his EQ on high whithout sacraficing performance. But id say, however, if you are willing to spend the money without losing your ********* to the wife, go for the newest Nvidia

well good luck with your decision

Radeon 9800 pro runs EQ2 very well.

I have one pc with an nvidia 6800 gt and one with a Radeon 9800 pro. The 6800 gt I have over clocked to 420mhz and it runs the game awesome. I can run the game at balanced with little frame rate loss, only in really densely populated areas, and even then its not bad.

The pc with the 9800 pro gets choppy on high performace anywhere there is more than 4 or 5 toons.

the nvidia 6800 gt is a scaled down version of the 6800 ultra but by over clocking it, which can easily and safely be done, you can get pretty close to the 6800 ultra's performance at a smaller price.

the added bonus is, if you play any other games, the nvidia runs doom 3 flawlessly at max settings. nvidia does openGL much better than ATI. I can also run WoW at max settings flawlessly as well. the 9800 pro cannot.

I know the x800 is a more direct comparison of card models, but I can only compare with what I have.

btw, both pc's have 2.8ghz hyperthreaded p4's and 1gb of dual channel 400mhz ram.

I'm personally picking up a Geforce 6600 GT to replace my now aged GF4Ti4200. The 6600 seems to currently be the best choice around if you're looking for a mid-range card. It goes for about $200 and has performance near to that of a $400 Radeon X800 Pro (depending on application, see here for a nice, recent card comparison). 'course, if you've got money to spend and intend to rock EQ2, the high end Radeon X800s and Geforce 6800s perform better - far as I know, they're pretty equal on most apps. Never paid much attention to either as I'm not personally interested in purchasing a high-end card.

Another thing to remember is that graphics card performance is often very application-specific. I haven't seen any controlled tests for performance on EQ2 and it could be that one brand handles the game better. 'course, as there's no possiblity to benchmark EQ, there's not likely to be any tests either ... but, I digress.

I have a Ge-Force FX 5950 Ultra with the newest (nov 9th) drivers installed. My machine is a pent 4 3.2 GHz with 1 GB ram and a SATA HD. Will I be able to set EQ2 up to high settings, or will it choke on the higher settings. I have DSL for internet and play CoH now with everything maxed I only get chop when there are latency issues. Was thinking of getting the 6800 Ultra, but if the card I have now will work fine then I'll hold off on a new card.

Athlon FX-53
2 Gigs DDR-400 RAM
Radeon X800 (256 Meg)

Runs flawlessly, as expected.

I have the same one and it PROC's like a charm!! Also, make sure the drivers for your video card are correctly installed, mine were not and it was very fustrating to learn that lesson. I also visited Sony and they have links that cured that problem.

With that processor turboether you won't see much gain with a x800 over a 9800. Or with Nvidia 6800 over a 5950.

Your processor will hold you back. If you're going for the higher end card you may want to upograde your processor too. Or buy the higher end for a future processor upgrade. Just don't be surprised with mediocre results if you don't.

Yeah...

I've thought about that. I think I will indeed get an Athlon 64 chip next. Maybe a 3000.

Oh yeah, I should add that my board does NOT have a PCI-Express slot, so none of those cards for me. Just AGP 8x.

Thanks for the advice. I'm planning to spend about 200 on the new Video Card and I'll grab a new chip and hope XP doesn't force me to re-activate windows, which is an entrely new thread altogether.

As always, I thank you all.

BTW, My new EQ2 toon is:
Jenku
Lvl 8 Fighter
Oasis Server

I'm also considering a new video card with my purchase of EQ2. Right now it freaking whores my system for all its worth.

Radeon 9500
512 DDR400 RAM
Athlon 2100+

It runs like *** .. to be honest. I know this is mostly a RAM issue and I'm working on getting another DIMM of the same RAM. In any case, beyond that, what does everybody think a solid video card would be for a setup like this that'd run EQ2 better then the 0-5 FPS I get in cities?

I've been considering the 9800 PRO, coupled with a gig of ram and my current CPU (which'll soon be upgraded to a 3200+). Anyway, thoughts?

I am very curious as to why ppl think this game is based soley off the videocard. I am running:
Athlon 2800+
2.5 gigs ddr 266
Ati radeon 9800 128mb
Audigy 2 Platinum

My roomate runs:

Athlon 64 (3500+)
1 gig ddr 333
Nvidia 6800 GT
Onboard Sound

My wife runs:

Athlon 2400+
1.5 Gigs ddr 266
Nvidia FX 5400(ehh Id have to check, I know its a lower end fx)
Onboard sound

We (roomate and I) are able to run on High quality even in Freeport with very minor lag (both systems). My wife is able to run on balanced. The point Im trying to make is while yes the game does revolve around video- You need to have the ram and cpu to back it up. As with everquest- you could play on 512 but whenever you asked the guy that just loaded into the zone a full minute faster than you, often times he'd have a bucket load of ram.
