From FFXI to EQ2...Follow

#1 Nov 12 2004 at 3:31 AM Rating: Default
4 days this game is out and theres so many threads..

Anyhew i'm selling my ffxi account and i'm gonna get EQ2 tomorrow hopefully, any suggestions on what to try, or servers/guilds i can be a part of?

I played ffxi for the whole year, all except computer and billing issues, but what killed me is the partying process. If you aren't boringly grinding for exp, your taking hella long to get a crappy item. I played the guild wars preview and i LOVED it. But it lacks more single player goodness. If i was right EQ1 was like a way better Diablo right? See.. i don't know. So is there any briefing i should get from coming out as a ffxi veteran?

Don't expect to see any Chocobos or Moogles. :)

haha. speaking of which.. is it all on-foot travel? and can you switch jobs with a quest or something?

You can have mounts. And there is not job switching a'la FFXI. You pick an archetype, and over the course of your career you can choose to branch off.

I suggest checking out the EQ2 main site. They have a pretty good explanation of the job tree, and how it breaks down.

Here's a few more game specific questions that have been eating at me.

#1) The location system.
It appears that the location (/loc) system is based on a latitude and longitude and a third number (elevation? bearing?).

While I understand the lat/long system, it's a little difficult to navigate by typing /loc every 10 seconds to find out if you're still moving in the right direction. Is there a way to use the location data in conjunction with the map?

#2) Macros!
Is there any way to create your own macros instead of typing in commands all the time? For instance, let's say I want to create a HO but I also want to alert the party before I use it. In FFXI you'd make a macro something like this:

/p Starting HO Now!!! <call>
/ja "Some HO Ability" <me>

How would you accomplish this in EQ2? I tried things like right clicking on the hotkey bar but didn't see an option for a custom macro.

#3) Party Member Locations
Is there a way to locate your party members on the map? In FFXI you had markers which represented their locations. Is there anything similar in EQ2?

#4) AH/Bazaar
I understand that there is no auction house or bazaar. I've read that you need to sell things from your house (while inside). This seems really odd but I've yet to experience trying to sell anything to other players so it might work well. I'm fresh off the boat (just got citizenship last night) so I'll wait and experience it first hand before I pass judgment.

If anyone would like to provide some general information on how to sell things effectively, it would be appreciated.

You can see your position on the map. This should let you know where you are and which cardinal direction you need to go to reach your goal.

If you go to your main menu and choose socials you will see a macro tab. To be honest I have not messed around with this much, but it looks similar to the system we are used to in FFXI.

The best you can do is to use your waypoints which will give you a glowing path to follow to them.

There are people called brokers that allow players to browse any player's bazaar. The bazaar works a lot like it did in FFXI, accept that you have to be in your house to sell.

The reason for this is to prevent intense lag like you saw in the bazaar in EQ live. So far the system has worked well, and the advantage over FF is that you can have more than 7 auctions. The disadvantage is that you cannot sell when you are offline.

This will slow the development of the economy which, in my opinion, is a good thing.

I will try my best, but I only know one of them because I found it out last night.

#3 By clicking on a party members name, their name will appear on you HUD regadless of how far away you are. I think that it also shows up if you are behind something.

Now, there is a menu for Macro's, but I have yet to look into it. From the looks of it, it appears a lot of the gameplay can be customized.

Hope that helps a little. And congrats on citizenship ;) FFXI, just gave us citizenship, whats up with Qeynos? Hehe

Not all travel will be on foot. I believe there will be Griffins and possible Horses. this is from the limited info I have found.

Anyone else care to enlighten a little more?

Thanks,

Griffin travel is already in place. There are towers dotted across the Commonlands, and you simply climb the tower and mount the griffin.

Horses and magic carpets can be purchased, but you can also get mounts through guild points.

One more thing, what's the deal with the mob drops and the party? Does the loot always go the the person who can click the fastest or is there a way to distribute the loot randomly?
#13 Nov 12 2004 at 11:20 AM Rating: Decent
Unless its a party setting I think its who clicks it the fastest..

there is a setting you can pick where you click the treasures and its like a lotto in FF.

Actually, its up to your group leader. I was kind of annoyed by this at first.

By default, a group is set to free for all, where whoever clicks it grabs it.

If the group leader right clicks the group menu, and selects group options, they can turn the system to lotting. Then, anytime an item is gotten, a window will pop up asking you if you want to lot on it or not.

I think theres a 3rd option too, similar to FFXI's quartermaster, but I haven't played with that yet.

IMHO, lotting is the only way to go.

Also, as someone who played FFXI for a year also, here are some of the main things that are making me decide to cancel my FFXI and play EQ2 now:

1. Lots of quests. Most I've come across so far are doable in a short period of time. So there are more quests, taking less time, with better rewards than FFXI. No more doing the Rank 4 mission for a few thousand gil.

2. Crafting won't break you at lower levels. You will spend some money on it, and maybe lose a little while you're learning it, but it's not the money pit it was in FFXI.

3. Zones are big, but not huge empty areas who's only reason for existance is to make you walk forever (in other words, I'm not missing La Theine, Konschtat, etc).

4. Trivial Loot System. You won't have to compete for mobs in the newbie zones with 20 high level players AOE farming.

5. New instances of zones open up when too many people are in the zone. Kinda hard to explain. Think of it as if Crawlers nest had a 50 person cap. Once about 45 people were in there, when you zone in, it would offer you a choice to go to crawlers nest or crawlers nest 2. Same zone, just people spread out among instances to avoid overcrowding and lag.

6. Bigger variety in gear. You can see 2 level 7 scouts, and they don't look identical. There are more choices than Brass at 1, Leather at 7, etc..

7. Although you will want to group for stuff, I've been playing since Monday mostly solo. All of the quests I found in the city suburb zones are soloable at the level you get them.

I guess the list could go on. I was an FFXI player skeptical of EQ2, but curious because of all the problems it has. The broken economy, the huge time sink of doing anything, and the paltry rewards if you actually accomplish it. I realize getting 98 copper for completing a quest in EQ2 is considered little money, but its much better than alot of the rewards in FFXI.
