When I first started playing I could log in and when I went to character selection screen, the screen was black but the music was still playing. I had no control over anything and ctrl-alt-delete would not work. I had to adjust the settings on my firewall that came with win service pack2 and now everything works fine.

Not sure if this is your issue or not but I hope it helps.

I had a similar problem. Anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour or so would go by and then my screen would go black. Sometimes this would be accompanied by some snippet of sound looping over and over. My system specs are similar to yours except I have 512MB RAM and a FX5600 256MB video card.

I went into my BIOS and set my AGP aperture size to 256mb and that seems to have fixed it. I played last night for over 2 hours without crashing.

Updating the video card's driver to the latest version should help, particularly if you are running Windows XP with service pack 2 installed (SP2). Since upgrading my video driver I have not experience system hangs up (cross my fingers).

I'm also getting the black screen. So far all I have is the character creator (that came with the preorder disc) but I am guessing I'll have the same problem tomorrow when I load up EQ2 for the first time. I've updated my Geforce 4 TI card drivers with no result. I do have the latest windows pak but I have no idea how to get to the firewall that windows is now running. Can somoene offer some help? I know someone mentioned that might be it. I am also running Norton Internet Security.
