If I become a Summoner, will my pets take away from my XP? What if I release or destroy my pet, do I then get full XP?

In a group setting, will my group lose xp to the pet?

Tocopheryl,

Base of what I know of EQ1 pets do take away some exp as your concerned a "group". You'll get full exp if your pet is gone/died/leased before the kill is maded. I only played eq2 for a few mins before work so I can't comment a lot about it. I wouldn't worry about it taking away exp since a great player/group will make more kill with pet then a group that has classes that have pet but choose not to use them and have lots of downtime via mana/health/death. If your class require component to cast your pet it might not worth it to kill it to get that little bit of exp your pet takes away. Remember I'm only speaking of EQ1 and hope this might give you something to base on if eq2 follow some of the same thing.

Pets in EQL do NOT lower any exp, unless the owner of that pet, or the group he/she is in does 0 (zero) damage to the NPC which they are attacking. I've played a Magician for over 12 months up until the release of EQ2, at one point pets did take exp but it was patched awhile later(this happened a long long time ago). Mysticwind may have played EQL during that time, but as of now they do not take exp unless your groups, or your own damage is 0. So.. Hopefully that has passed it's self on to EQ2 =)

Unlike the way it used to be in EQlive, pets do not seem to have an impact on experience in EQ2.

No, they don't.

They haven't taken XP in EQLive for quite a while, and even "Back in the day" they didn't take much.

I've had my pet steal xp but in a really odd way. Near the end of fighting a mob my pet jumps in and "rescues" me from it, forcing an encounter break that acts like calling for help. I then get no xp, no loot, and an urge to beat my pet senseless.

Mysticwind and Teaerwen are both correct.

pet in EQ 1 DID take exp from group. thats why no one wanna group with mages and necros. after several patches(forgot which patch, I think around 3 years after EQ 1 was first released, probably around Luclin expension or its precious expension), they changed it. and more and more peoples willing to group with Mages.

I had been playing mage for 5 years. yeah, I solo'd almost 40 levels from lvl 1 to 65 on my own.

I think pet wont eat anymore exp as long as pet is not doing all the work

Great! This is exactly what I was looking for. I want to be a pet user but getting groups in EQ1 was so difficult because of the XP code. The same thing happens in FFXI so BST simply have the pet not attack and just let it die before doing the last sliver of HP off of the target.

Now the question is, will players in EQ2 be willing to use a group slot for a pet class when other classes can bring more benefits to the group?

Although I think the group buffs the pet classes get should help in this along with the pet buffs themselves.
