All my DoH are between 36-46. I have a lot of crafting materia I's. Should I use some/all of them now or save them for higher levels?

Those sell for a lot on the auction house. Since they are so expensive its best to wait until you get your ilvl 50 HQ job specific craft gear if you are going to meld them into your equipment. Prior to lvl 50 there really isnt anything that you need to make that would require you to meld the materia to your sub-ilvl50 gear. You are just going to end up turning over and converting that lower ilvl equipment once you hit 50 (unless you are planning on saving it for another craft job).

Usually the materia I are used by high ilvl level crafters in the last slot of their equipment so that they can cap the stat.

And on Lamia server these days, that means blowing 10K a shot trying to get that 5th meld in at a 20% chance....

... still cheaper than buying HQ

Valkayree is pretty spot on.

If you plan on getting serious with crafting you will need lots of some of them..

If you look down at the i55 peices allot of them uses Competence 1 or command 1 on the end. Since they are on the end the meld rate is very low.
In some cases it took me over 20 pieces of materia of to meld that one spot on the end.
I wish I knew what I know about crafting now because I would have spirit bound a lot more gear on the way up.

Same goes for gathering classes..

(Most of) the gear you are wearing now is going to get replaced, so you don't want to invest much into them. However, the gear you are currently wearing makes for good fodder to convert into materia, and having materia melded onto the gear will speed up spirit bonding. It doesn't matter what kind or tier of materia you meld: each piece increases spiritbonding rate by 20%. So if your gear needs a little help getting completed spirit bound in a timely manner, just meld some really cheap materia to it (like tier 1 elemental materia).

Save them (or sell them, but don't use them now). Tier 1 materia is still useful in several high-end gear, due to lower caps on certain stats (for instance, there's a few pieces of high-end gear where you can still only stick 1-3 point of craftsmanship, or 1-3 points of gathering, so using higher tier materia isn't beneficial unless the materia is significantly cheaper)

When doing overmelds on a piece of gear, the lower the tier of the materia you've been using, the greater the chance of success on your overmelds. It's not a *huge* difference, but every percentage can help...
