People are justifying that DRK is a tank because the original FF (Final Fantasy 1, for the Famicom) it was a tank.
I must be old because I could have sworn Dark Knight didn't exist in Final Fantasy 1. **** memory must be failing me! >___> good lord the lengths people will go to say Yoshida does FF "better" lol.
Normally I don't agree with you on many things, but yeah, that is silly. Dark Knight's first appearance was in FFII (the player character Leon). In FFIII, Dark Knight was a job you could unlock during your adventure, and in the original NES they (oddly enough) used low level White Magic.
Then of course you have FFIV (go go Cecil), FFT (I would kill for a FFT-style DRK in FFXIV, and FFT-style SAM for that matter), X-2, XI, and Lightning Returns: FFXIII.
Here's the FF Wiki's page on Dark Knight if anyone wants more history/background/appearances on the job. Also, I don't see why DRK getting the tank role suddenly means it can't bring the pain as well. They can still have their "sacrifice HP to deal the 1337 damage" schtick if SE wants them to. Also, isn't WAR know for putting out some very good DPS when they're not focused on tanking? There's no reason why DRK can't do the same. One more thing. I miss the days when tank actually meant "high HP, Strength, and Defense" and not only took the hits like a champ, but returned them in full force as well. The MMORPG's definition of tank these days kinda irks me in that regard.
Addendum: The OF reminds me of the time when Scholar was revealed to be a fairy-controlling healer. "WTF SE why can't they nuke, you're ruining an iconic class (nevermind the fact that SCH hasn't even appeared that often in FF as it is), why isn't it like XI?!"
