now if only there was a way to control what TYPE of materias you get (type not tier) i.e i wouldnt wanna waste all day spiritbonding tier 4 just to get 10 tier 4 materia and NONE of them be the type I want lol
Even if that does happen, you can take a chance on converting them to something more useful/valuable at the Gobbie NPC near Drybone. Of course, this is a gamble, but if you get 5 junk tier IV's that are worth next to nothing, it's certainly worth a shot.
Awesome tip. Thank you, didnt know you could even do this! RUP.
It was added in a patch or two ago, the reason you likely didn't know/hear about it is because it was largely deemed "not worth it" and kind of forgotten about in the long run lol.
Mmhmm, realistically, you turn 5 materia (was it 5?) into a random single materia of equal level. If you used 1x T3 and 4x T2 you would get a 19% chance to get a T3 materia back, or a 76% chance to get a T2 materia. And there was at all times a 5% chance to upgrade your tier into the next level. You could use this to essentiall get cheap "upgrades" if the materia you throw in is trash.
But the downside is that...
6 materia are for Elements.
6 are for attributes
4 are for sub-stats (accuracy, determination, crit, parry)
2 are for speed (skill speed/spell speed)
3 are for crafting
3 are for gathering
And if there is one specific materia you're after, you get a 1 in a 24 RNG chance of getting the right one.
Which was already bad, but if you use 5x Tier 3 hoping to get a Tier 4 out of it, you're basicly looking at a 1 in 480 chance to get a Tier 4 materia that you were after.
And if you use the common 1x T4 and 4x T3 you'd still be looking at a 1 in 120 chance of getting the Tier 4 materia you were after.
The only reasonable way to do this is to use 5x Tier 4 materia, which would be immensely expensive (even elemental ones) and would still only get you a 1 in 24 chance of getting that materia you were after.
So unless the materia you want is 500.000 gil, and you can purchase a Tier 4 materia of any kind for gamling for less than 4166 gil, you shouldnt bother with this unless you're feeling extremely lucky. (5x Tier 4 at a 4% chance makes you need 120 before you get it right)
I went through 80 materia myself the day this came out. My entire retainer stockpile of Tier 3's and the end of the day i got three materia that i wanted to use for melding on my crafter, and nothing even remotely worth selling.
