What he's arguing is that we don't know whether sales were lower than expected. For all we know, SE could have anticipated moving 30k units during the first week and 20k units over the course of the next month.... in which case sales would be right on par or slightly better than expected.

Otherwise, we all seem in agreement.

You say this like everyone just made the assumption that they'd be buying a PS4, and that they'd automatically get the upgrade for free, when in reality, a huge portion of the PS3 sales for the game came before they even announced when the PS4 version would be released, and that it would be a free upgrade. http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/09/09/final-fantasy-xiv-ps3-can-be-upgraded-to-ps4-for-free

Unless I missed it somewhere, this information about the free upgrade wasn't even AVAILABLE prior to the game being released. Please, correct me if I'm wrong, I certainly couldn't find any links to support your theory... which is definitely a theory based on what I just provided you with, not "common sense" like you felt the need to claim.

As an aside, I know a TON of people that bought the game on PS3 to play on PS3, not as some stepping stone to wait for the PS4.

The fact still remains that a certain amount of the PS3 sales were from people who were purchasing with PS4 in mind. I never represented that everyone was aware of upgrades prior to launch. It honestly wouldn't matter much anyway because we know that some people bought PS3 version for PS3, some bought it for PS4 and none of us have any idea how many for which.

Just like some people registered ARR as a new subscriber and some registered to expand service to a new platform. We know that both of these types of players exist, but we don't know how many. That's why these numbers mean so little to me. There are more factors involved than just how many registrations or copies sold. The only numbers that should be used as a gauge for anything are subscriber numbers because everything else is inflated, inaccurate or both.

I'm sorry, I need to step in here in both threads. The free PS4 upgrade was announced as far back as September, if not earlier. Source.

And I'll respond here with the same thing as the other thread: Yes, it was. And the time it was announced, roughly September 13th, is well after the launch of the game, which is well after the time most people had already purchased the PS3 version.

Yeeessssss, and you're going to argue with me that after that fact, nobody purchased it to upgrade later? Including after the price dropped and it became more appealing?

I bought the PS3 version before I knew of the free PS4 upgrade, but I did buy a PS4 way earlier than I would have because of the upgrade.

Really now? Smiley: dubious

The upgrade was announced before the PS4 launch, not the launch of the game on PS3 and PC. If you go back and look at where you quoted me you'll see that I was talking about PS4 launch. People knew before PS4 launch and that's what is important here. If you don't think that would have influenced sales than I don't really know what to say to you.

SE basically said:
Hey, we're gonna take our time making sure the PS4 version looks great but in the meantime... if you have a PS3 and you purchase that version of the game, we will provide you with and upgrade to the full version for the PS4 when it's released... at no charge.

They don't even need rhetoric for that Bart. It sells itself. Smiley: clown

I didn't debunk anything. All I did was affirm the fact that sales were much lower than expected

You don't know what the expectations were in the first place. Which was my point. Your logic is flawed.

Exactly.

SE has released no data about its expectations for ps4 software sales.
