'Tripple the size of the zones' is a misnomer, and downright false.
Scaling wise the distances from one true end of the zone to the other is about the same. The difference is that in FFXI, the entrances were placed most often at polar opposites of zonelines where in FFXIV there are multiple interlaced entrances.
I illustrated another point about the maps in FFXI vs FFXIV in the official boards not long ago, to the effect that FFXIV Zones seem smaller because of the way they are outlayed. You literally cannot see more than a quarter of the zone at any given time maximum, where in FFXI, the zones were so wide open they had to write scripts for progressive rendering of the zones. (You could see a tree change shape and get more detailed as you approached it.)
East Sarutabaruta is not larger than Eastern Shroud. Shroud is just segmented where Saurtabaruta's one big block on the map.
Also, default run speed in FFXIV is faster as well, nobody seems to note that fact as part of the ease of travel notes.
