loved guivre. also had fun with the random NM pirate attack on the ferry and getting a unique whm hammer from it.

I wonder if surprises like these would make people rage quit in this day and age? I get that feeling from when I was failing my job quests and got the "echo" buff against my will. I was ok with failing and planning a better attack next time. But noooo.... evidently SE was so terrified of me rage un-subbing since I had hit a bit of a hurdle with a silly class quest instance that they felt the need to give me easy echo mode just because I died a few times and OH NOES my gear got damaged!

On a good note, at least I'm getting some challenge in the coil. Oh wait, they gonna nerf that too? Extremes still offer what I think is an appropriate "extreme" challenge. I'm very satisfied with ultima hard mode, since it's too tough for me. Most endgame is fine. Levels 1-20 are easy as they should be. 21 - 49 is almost as easy and that is where my major issue is. And then after you've floated comfortably though .... BAM TITAN HARD MODE!

I like that yoshi is listening to the masses, but he needs to ignore whiners that are PISSED b/c they die sometimes and don't level 1-50 in a day. I feel a bit of a difficulty and surprise bump (especially mid level) would make SE lose some subs initially, but retain subs that appreciate the journey such as old ff11 players that have already voiced similar concerns multiple times.

XI also added in the Caturae in Abyssea zones. Most of the time you could avoid them, but the one in Abyssea-Tahrongi liked to make the rounds in an unpredictable pattern right in prime solo territory. So many deaths. So many deaths.

Or, you could just go hire someone to spank you if your masochistic tendencies are that bad.

wanting challenging unexpected encounters.... yeah I guess that makes me into bdsm. I guess you would quit your sub and go crying to mommy if things didn't go EXACTLY as the 1337 walkthrough guide predicted in your WP run. Maybe wanting to get nearly killed in the open world instead of drunkenly obliterating mobs with NO effort whatsoever during beast tribe quests makes me want to strap on a leather harness and get whipped. If that's the case, yeah I'm masochistic.

hey at least dark souls 2 is coming out soon for those of us that appreciate richer gameplay.

OP has pinpointed one of the major flaws in the modern mmo model and everyone here rates him down. he wasnt even being negative. its a sad state of affairs. human beings that crave intellectual stimulation get bored and unhappy with repetition.

XIV is many things, many of them good. but it is safe, repetitive, and predictable gameplay. thats fine and relaxing for when i want that sort of thing, but sometimes i don't. its just disappointing that i have to look elsewhere for that experience but i guess its not really a big deal.

i feel like XIV will be one of the last and best examples of the modern mmo model. mmos have better days ahead.

DkS2 has just as much rich gameplay as FFXIV. The only difference is DkS2 is over in <20h while in FFXIV the same amount of rich gameplay is scattered over hundreds of hours, with most of that being repetitive.

Now the difference between the modern MMO and the relic MMO is that nowadays the gameplay is richer and scattered over hundreds of hours instead of thousands or tens of thousands.

The difference between DkS and the relic MMO is that DkS is actually fair in presenting its challenge and does not hide it's difficulty behind obscure mechanics and rules that take ages to figure out.

MMOs may have better days ahead but MMO players will continue to be miserable. What is challenging about getting owned by a monster that didn't offer you a fair shot in the first place? That's the MMO middlefinger.
