Newbie Questions on GearFollow

#1 Jan 07 2014 at 1:47 PM Rating: Decent
Hello all,
Just last week I purchased FFXIV and have been loving it! I reached lvl 15 with my LNC this morning. I have a couple of questions:

1) I have been reading a lot of guides (beginner, leveling, etc.) and found the following recommendations:
> To not worry about gear until Level 15 since you go through it so frequently
> To choose the bronze pieces when given the option of rewards through quests
Now, because of the above, I am at level 15 and my gear is basically all from when I was level 5. Now that I'm at level 15, where should I be getting the gear from?

2) Assuming that I should be purchasing gear, can I purchase it from the AH at level 15? Or do I have to wait until later

3) If I can't purchase it from the AH, then how do I know what shops have the gear that I need?

Thanks for your help!

Dungeons will now drop gear for you. You might need to buy a piece or two from the Market Boards, since leveling via dungeons has been sped up. Typically, you will need to run the dungeon 4-8 times before the next one is available, giving you time to acquire the gear said dungeon drops. If you level out of that dungeon and still have significantly lower gear in some slots, then hit the Market Board and buy what you need. Gear is extremely cheap ATM, so it shouldn't be too bad. If you do some fates and supply/provision missions from the Grand Company you chose, then you can use Grand Company Seals to buy gear also.

If you want to know where you can find a certain piece of gear, check out FFXIV Database. It's linked at the top of the forum as well.

1) As IKickYoDog mentioned, you can get gear from dungeons, starting at 15. However, you should get your weapon upgraded to as close to your level as possible before going in if you haven't already. Being undergeared on armor/jewelry is nowhere near as fatal as being undergeared on weaponry, no matter your class, because the weapon damage (magical or physical, depending on class) heavily controls how effective your damage/heals are.

2) Yes you can buy it from the Market Board.

3) Many of the shops have a multiple choice option when you access them. You're looking for Battle gear.

Keep in mind that with the XP you will get, Sastasha will bump you to 16, Tam Tara will bump you to 17, and Copperbell will bump you to 18 with one run of each in the vast majority of cases.

I don't think you should buy gear after you level out of each dungeon, but maybe after you level through each "tier" of dungeons. Sastasha is the first dungeon and it's available at level 15, then Tam-Tara Deepcroft is available at 16. Copperbell Mines and Halatali are next, and are available at level 17. I would say at 15, start running Sastasha and then when you get to 16, add in the low level Duty Roulette. When you get to level 20 or so, upgrade any piece that is lower than level 15.

Also, do your level 15 class quest before grinding the dungeons because this will give you a level 15 weapon to start grinding dungeons with and the Shield lob skill which is great for pulling. You can also buy the full set of bronze gear off the market board before you start, but that's really not necessary.

Thank you all for your responses. As a quick follow-up, should I buy a few pieces of gear before starting the dungeons? My current gear is level 5

Get yourself the highest level weapon you can equip, and if there are any pieces going for very cheap on the market boards, grab those. I wouldn't pay more than 100 gil for a piece of gear other than your weapon, since it'll be replaced by dungeon gear very quickly.

And to reiterate, for the weapon slot, nothing you can buy at that point is enough better than your level 15 class quest weapon to make it worth spending any gil on. In other words, do your level 15 class quest and use that weapon until you either get a better drop or get the level 20 class quest weapon.
