2.1, the patch that was overwhelming on paperFollow

You all have seen the list of features, and it still looks overwhelming. However, I`ve come to wonder about several things.

First, my layman impression was that housing is a "fun-type" side feature. Something you can do to relax. On your own,
alone, to express your personal taste, and perhaps to invite over some friend and sip an ale in front of the Ifrit stove.

Now I found out that for the foreseeable future, there is no way I could do that. Because housing turned out to be all
about working your *** off for several months to gather money, then have your GC leader decide on the location, style,
and furniture. And don`t forget to knock before you enter, because someone else is using the bathroom!

PVP also left a sour taste in my mouth. So I join, and gather PVP experience, which makes me stronger. Cool stuff,
but what happens when I just want to have a fair match where victory is not determined by the number of times a
team grinded the colosseum for max PVP points? Isn`t there a "league" type system that matches teams according
to their overall PVP experience? And why do I get the impression that it`s all about sprint-sprint-jump-dodge?

I have to admit I never played PVP in a MMO before, so please (!) be merciful about my naveity... but is this normal?
I actually expected, you know, cool tactical combat that required a synergy of tactics and group combos to set up and
trigger traps, leeway for unusual moves and strategy, the ability to develop a personal playstyle that surprises enemies...

Then again, I am more into tactical combat that requires forward planning (e.g., trading card games or SRPGs) anyway,
so as long as PVP remains a "sidedish", I guess I have no right to complain!

...

Well. That`s all I have to say. But I guess I`m not alone with my opinion?

It was swing-and-miss for most things. Housing was a disappointment, and the proposed 10% they're taking off isnt going to fix anything. There's one "small" house on my server, and that's basicly it. And small houses are basicly storage shacks, nothing more. My FC isnt going to be able to purchase a house anytime soon this year, and the urge of some people to just quit is growing by the day.

Most if not all of the changes to dungeons and jobs were ill-deserved and rediculous to both sides of the spectrum. AK should have never been gimped like this, instead of making it "easier" by removing two groups of 3 weak monsters, they made it take 2 minutes less for a fraction of the rewards, while other dungeons can be done in 8 minutes for the very same rewards. No one does AK anymore, which used to be my favorite dungeon before all this. And new drops and incentives could have been devised for the new dungeons instead of simply moving the things that used to drop in AK over there.

The warrior changes are still rediculous. Properly played, a Warrior could (pre-2.1) solo-tank some of the bosses in the Coil even. Now they got every single little thing a PLD can do, as well as have 25% more HP and most of them still complain they cant do anything (because those are the very same people who couldnt play Warrior well to begin with and caused these changes). To anyone who can play the job properly, Warriors are now gods and Paladins can forget about ever getting a party anymore :/

PVP in my opinion is, and has always been, about finding the thing people can exploit most to win, in this example, jumping around, black mage sleeping and using pre-made 3-man groups in excellent PVP gear to infiltrate the "newbie league" instead of being matched up against other pre-made groups if they would have taken 4 people.

They keep that up till it becomes bannable or is fixed, and then move on to find the next best thing they can exploit untill starting over once again.

I dont feel it has ever had a "fair" aspect to it in any game. In WoW for instance, level 80's used to camp right outside Booty Bay (some level 25-ish area or so) back when i played it and made sure you couldnt get any exp or do anything basicly since they loved fighting people who couldnt possible put up a fair fight back.

Any game turns what should basicly have been fun, relaxing and a place for people to just ***** around a little in absurb set-ups that wouldnt work in everday gameplay, into pure PRO-LEAGUE Hardcore PVP where people only fight the battles they know they can win.

I've said it before, and i'll say it many times, PVP doesnt have a place in a Final Fantasy game. It's not worth turning what is basicly a great game with a lot of potential into an Elitist ********* even though it's already going in that general direction.

The few good things about 2.1 were Treasure Hunting (despite it's rediculous restrictions), Two Hard-Mode Dungeons and Crystal Tower is kinda enjoyable if you dont get any Elitist asshats among your other 23 participants (good luck with that).

3 hours after the 2.1 patch went online I tried PvP and when we lost was told I sucked as a black mage because I didnt have the entire other party asleep at the beginning of the match. That was my first match. PvP just seems to attract the worst kind of players.

Much as I loathe PvP for the types of annoying players it tends to attract, attempting to look at it objectively I'm comfortable in saying that MMO PvP should never be gear-based. If it is, steps must be taken to more fairly group people together so you don't get high gear level folks smashing lowbies and demoralizing them into quitting. But this also has the problem of thinning the pool of competition, resulting in likely longer queues if such a system is in place. PUGs vs. Pre-Mades is another topic. I've also always, always, hated the whole "dance around and bunny hop" aspect of combat. Obviously it's to try and exploit LoS issues, but it's just always looked dumb to me. I'd love to see them slap a 300 TP cost to jumping in PvP just to curb it. So, while I won't say it doesn't have a place in XIV, I don't think it'll ever be done well. These are problems present in damn near every MMO to some degree.

Any other gripes I have with the patch mostly lie in the realm of SE telling us we can't play the game how we'd like. Want to farm up your own treasure maps all day? Nope. Want to do some dailies? Hahaha, good luck seeing the respective FATE(s)! Gear up an alt class with CT? One piece per week, bro, slow the **** down! As a BLM, I'm unhappy with what they did to Umbral Ice instead of just giving Flare a 3-5s cooldown. People more versed in other classes are free to voice their concerns, too. The open world endgame and worth of crafting still needs some help desperately, but that seems to be in wait and see mode for me.

To me I was kinda excited, for things like new dungeons, and Crystal tower, but I was very dissapointed. Was never really interested in PvP, as its always just a pain, full of asshats, and elitests.

Hard mode dungeons, some minor changes to the old dungeons, and no real rewards other than gearing for vanity. Now that getting Philo tomes is super easy you can gear a class in DL in less than a week so it serves no point to me. Crystal Tower is just one big zerg fest, and if you have atleast 2-3 cappable tanks and some decent healers its hard to wipe really. The whole lockout is a giant pain in the ***.

Extreme mode Primals are just the next level for elitests to sell.

Treasuer hunt is just a mini game with a super long lockout for what little it actually offers.

The whole dodge or die mechanics of bosses are tiresome, and getting old. I really had hopes for 2.1 but its just getting to stale really fast.

Housing with the prices are just a joke, that only the super rich or super large FC can afford, my FC is 20% to getting the smallest one when it becomes the cheapest in a few months. Sorry but thats a bad joke on SEs part.

As much as I don't like the 18-hr lockout on Treasure Maps, it also makes sense. If SE didn't put some sort of timer on it, then they would be an endless gil-fountain for all. Immense amounts of gil would fill the economy out of thin air. It's no secret we needed more gil in the worlds spread a little more evenly, but they had to curb it somehow.

Housing is a system in its infancy, most akin to how we once had empty hamlets in the days of 1.0 that were eventually made to be a little more lively. I was a bit disappointed at the pricing myself. I mean I knew it was going to be high, but nothing prepared me for the final figures that were released for the Legacy servers. I see housing now as a goal to strive towards with a Free Company (FC) you feel comfortable with and trust. There are many that are out there where this will never happen, but some do exist that are genuine. The fact that some FC's have already been able to afford some of the prices shows there is a lot of gil not being spent and housing has provided an outlet to get some of that gil out of circulation. From my experience it has also helped to bring some players together and focus them more. Even with my limited playtime I'm finding myself logging on more to help out my FC as much as I can.

I personally do not have a lot of experience with PVP. My first run was a lvl 30 cap that wasn't the most pleasant of experiences. The overall shortness of each match seemed jarring. Again though I see the PVP system as one where the foundation has been placed, but refinements are definitely needed. Such as balancing issues, extra play modes, etc. to suit a greater variety of play styles. I would love to see additional arenas and a "Capture the Flag" type mode.

While 2.1 was overwhelming I'm still sifting through most of the content and have been enjoying every minute of it!

Agreed! Having to wait that extra second really is a drag when they could have put a cooldown on Flare.

I cared little about housing when I first heard about it and care even less now that I've seen it. It's a feature that people wanted so I commend SE for adding it to the game, but the implementation fell pretty flat. Incredibly lofty goal for most players, yet there is almost no benefit to it. Looks great, serves no purpose at all.

SE actually gets a pass from me on the PvP issues. I don't think PvP really had any reason to be in the game other than enough people voicing that they wanted it implemented and SE deciding that it would be in their best interest to add it. It was clearly an afterthought when you look at the mechanics(spell and ability usage, damage and cc properties, arena layout, ect.). This is only complicated by the fact that player's hurtboxes are almost non-existent and server checks for player positioning have a sort of 'close enough counts' feel.

I was excited for the treasure hunts because it seemed like one of the few features that bring the adventuring RPG feel to the game, but I wasn't a fan of the lockouts. God forbid you should be able to make a little money doing something you might actually enjoy Smiley: oyvey

I absolutely love Haukke HM and Pharos Sirius. I would love Crystal Tower if the people running it weren't usually a colossal pack of jerks. The content of CT itself is great, and I don't mind the lockout. It just means people pass on lots of good gear that I can snap up if I want it since I'm not picky. Got SCH legs off Acheron last week. Copperbell HM is meh. Definitely the least interesting of the three.

Treasure hunting looks meh. Zero interest.
PVP is god awful. Like a cross between Ballista and Call of Duty with the community of the latter. No thank you.

Haven't attempted Ultima, EX Primals, or King Mog yet.

It isn't so much the waiting as it seems to be an inconsistency in MP replenishment. Sometimes I can go into UI, do B1, T3, and then back to Fire spells no problem. Other times I get caught around 2600 MP for no discernible reason despite doing the same thing. This was never a problem pre-patch.

As for gil flooding the economy if maps were spammable, well, that's when you cut down their gold pay out or remove it entirely. I'd much rather see more interesting craft mats and subsequent recipes to utilize them coming from this than just gil. Get semi-decent stuff circulating via the AH again and Yoshi can have a moderate gil sink out of it.

In WoW's defense, your talking about open world PvP, which is easily avoidable by joining a PvE server and you would never have to worry about getting ganked. I personally enjoyed the open world PvP in WoW, people start ganking, more people show up, and soon you have a 20 vs 20 open world battle raging.

But I agree in the fact that PvP has always been far from "fair", even in battlegrounds your always going to run into the few people who are extremely geared out and just melt your face no matter what happens, but that's part of the game IMO.

As far as AAR PvP, why they didn't release some kind of objective based games like CTF or territories is beyond me, I don't mind the arena style PvP but after a few matches it gets pretty boring for me.

I've done a bit of PvP and so far am pretty underwhelmed. The mechanics are the exact same as PvE (with a few huge CD abilities added in when you can purchase), the arena is just a big boring circle, and every match I've ever been in has either been a blm spam sleeping the group until everyone is dead, or a bunch of people sprinting around in circles doing nothing to each other. There is virtually no strategy involved other than try and zerg down their healer/blm as fast as possible or else keep repeatedly jumping to avoid some damage. It feels like a half finished system that they just threw in, much like the housing.

Housing, well... I've gone in depth about my feelings on the pricing already, so we'll leave it at that. I will say that my FC has done a pretty remarkable job in gathering funds for our house thus far... and we're still barely 1/4 of our way to our goal for a medium size house. I guess on the plus side it gives us something to work towards... 2.5 months from now.

Treasure hunts are awesome. The lockouts are awful. What they should have done was made like a 6h lockout on toadskin maps, a 12 hour lockout on boarskin maps, and a 24 hour lockout on peisteskin... so you can do more than 1 a day, but can't get the huge rewards of an 8-man group more than once a day.

Roulette was a genius decision, and I'm still happy with it.

New dungeons are a mixed bag. I absolutely LOVE Haukke HM. I absolutely HATE Pharos Sirius. I haven't even gotten a Copperbell HM yet...

Dailies, to me at least, are boring and just another grind. I was hoping the quests would be fun and interesting, but most are just "kill X of Y", or "destroy X". The somewhat fun ones, like riding the gobbue or drake mounts, are just to rare and too short to make up for it. And the stupid Magitek Menace FATE one is so annoying. Overall I'm very unimpressed by them so far. I hope that the top tier ones are actually more involved and fun, like fighting boss mobs that you don't just faceroll in 30 seconds.

I can't comment on much else as I just haven't had the time to run it yet. Overall though, I'm relatively appeased with the update. I wish housing, pvp, and dailies were better... but we got a lot of content for a patch, so I'm reserving harsher judgement to see how things pan out in 3-6 months.

Great idea!

Hard to keep track of perhaps. The maps should show up in the "TIMERS" menu, along with thing like CT drop lockout, Myth Stone cap Reset, Coil reset, daily beastman tribe quest reset. Well, maybe a crazy idea but anything with a lockout associated should show up under TIMERS.

As far as the OP, I've been busy, busy, busy since the new patch and haven't done even half of what I plan to do!

I am not so concerned about TIII or throwing a B1 in between to have full mana. I am just ticked that I have to wait a few ticks (no pun intended).

in an rpg or strategy game most people get fustraited if they cannot be something purely through strategy and not based on reaction time and sometimes just random positioning.

Personally I don't mind either way but that's why in rpgs they have a tendancy to get upset.

im truly happy with 2.1 i have a ton of stuff to do
run CT about 4-6 times sometimes more waiting for the piece i want to drop
run coil 1-4
ulitma farm sill missing my ring
ex primals
i still have not gotten the time to run dailies treasure hunt pvp and all the new quest.
housing will be nice down the road

and as far as lockouts go, i think this game would die out in a month or two without lockouts. and i think thats due to the lack of specialized gear, everything is so vertical with a bis that is best for all situations and all other gear becomes obsolete.

as it stands now i have 2 level 50 jobs and each week i can get 1 80 item and 80 acc and a chance at a level 90 coil drop and every other week a guaranteed 90 myth item. to me getting 1 or 2 items a week is not bad.

with out lock outs you could pretty much bis a job in a week or less. as hard at coil is the first time or with random groups each turn is about 15 min or less. and with out myth lock outs CT becomes obsolete along with DL.

Given that I have even less time to play, the duty roulette, CT and the other new dungeons are more than enough.

I still haven't beat CBM or Haukke HM.

Yes housing was disappointing, and I haven't even bothered to PvP (ironic, because I always PvP in other MMOs while ignoring end game dungeons), but for a .1 patch it will keep me busy for a bit.

I'm still working on my Zenith Relic or whatever its called now (about 300 myth away) and still need a couple of slots filled with 70+. I figure that will take me about a month or so... I would like a full ilvl 80 Fuma Set for my MNK while I'm working on AF2. So again that will take a while until 2.2.+

Overall, I like 2.1. Not everything is perfect but there is enough there to keep me wanting to play.

CT is great. I actually have something to do when I log on even if it's just glorified philosophy tome grinding. What is different than, say, WP grinding is that people actually talk in CT. Yes, sometimes people are just rude, but most of the time it's people working together to achieve something. This is what this MMO needed. It reminds me so much of Throne of Thunder.

I was not a big fan of the lockout on loot in CT but after spending some time with it, I think it's fair. I know that I can run CT all week and aim for one piece of gear that I'm almost guaranteed opposed to something like coil where I have no idea what I will get and have to spend mythology carefully as a result. Since I haven't seen a pair of pants in about 3+ months of coil, I ran CT this week specifically aiming for the pants to fill in till they either drop from coil or I buy the mythology ones.

I was able to pick up healing gear for my SCH too. And, with the ample amount of philosophy I gain, I made several pieces of gear for SCH at dirt cheap costs.

Housing prices were disappointing, yes. If I were on a legacy server, I'd go crazy. I'm glad they made it so that the prices will reduce down to what the highest priced non-legacy servers are, though. However, my FC is coming together to try to buy a medium house. It's a very nice thing to have to work towards. It isn't related to my gear at all: it's something for all of us. I love all the housing areas and can't wait till people start moving in to the plots. I love talking to other FCs that I speak with frequently about where they plan to move. I found out that one of the FCs I like a lot is going to be our next door neighbors!

I dislike PVP quite a bit. This comes from someone who enjoyed ballista so much and PVP'd in WoW almost exclusively. Perhaps it's due to the class I main or perhaps due to the gearing issue...but it just isn't fun. I hate the fact that I am interrupted by something like a pet when I go to cast. I HATE the fact that people can run circles around me where I can't get casts off, forcing swiftcast or use of specific camera settings.

The new HM dungeons are wonderful. I love the music in Haukke Manor so much. I like how it is incorporated into the battle music, too. Pharos Sirius was a very fun challenge but the music died 2 minutes in which was really displeasing.

On that note, duty roulette freaking rocks and the commendation system has made parties more talkative. Some may say it has changed attitudes but I still say there are plenty of people who will always remain jerks, regardless:

http://i.imgur.com/vuBO32K.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/NvsIQid.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/yXYTe5l.jpg

Smiley: rolleyes

The extreme primals are super fun as is Ultima. I like these challenging aspects but I am sad to see posts on the official forums (aka: crazy town) about how Titan is not fun or how Ultima touched them in an inappropriate area with his defractive laser. It's like people don't understand what the word extreme entails. I've successfully PUGed Ultima and Garuda. I suspect people will be able to do Titan through DF or PF very soon. Ifrit is a joke in comparison to Titan.

The story added was OK. I am not a big fan of the story thus far and feel like it was rushed...but the battle they added (King Moggle Mog) is very fun! I do like the cliffhanger they end on.

Treasure hunting seems OK as well. I have no DoL job at 50 so I cannot mine 4 maps but have gone on a few treasure hunts with friends.

I have mixed feelings about nerfs to FATEs. I'm finding it very difficult to level WHM now. Almost all FATE zones I try to go to are dead leaving me to level through duty roulette or dungeons. I don't find dungeons give enough exp to warrant the time, however, especially when I'm stuck in Copperbell for the 7th time. However, I like the fact that they've made leveling slower. I felt like I could get a class to 50 every week and that is pretty much what I was doing. Now, the pace is set slower and people will have more to do. Nerfing FATEs into obsoletion, though, was just plain stupid.

And yes: I find the sort feature to be one of the more awesome things added in this patch. Smiley: wink
