The minions were inspired by the pets in WoW, and the pet interaction is a page out of the same playbook. I'm hoping they will be further inspired to bring in minion battles like WoW has as well. That will be a hoot!
Actually minions have been in other MMOs before WOW. WOW just copy a system that was becoming popular, for example Fly For Fun had pet since 2005 which you level and grant you stats as they grow. The WOW pet battle system is just a copy of pokemon which is been done since the late 90s. SE is finally doing a move forward with the pet interactions with their surroundings. I do want a pet battle system too, giving you more options in the game for interaction with other player other than the current endgame battle system.
Edited, Dec 19th 2013 12:23pm by FedeMax I've never heard of Fly for Fun, but Wikipedia tells me that World of Warcraft released in November 2004 with a large variety of pets on launch day, over a year before Fly for Fun (which released in December 2005). I would say there might be a good chance that they copied WoW as well, but I don't know or care to know for sure (but I'd bet on it). You mentioned that other MMOs had minions before WoW. Which ones?
I'm not directing this next part at you, FedeMax, just the internet Final Fantasy fandom at large when WoW gets mentioned. It isn't the end of the world to give props to Blizzard for reinventing the MMO and making it more accessible to the general gaming public. FFXIV:ARR wouldn't be as successful if they didn't take a lot of the good things that WoW brought to the table and incorporate them into Eorzia. Warcraft didn't do a lot of things first, but it did them very well and redefined them. You can bet your bottom dollar that Yoshi P has played a ton of WoW and knows what makes it tick, as well as a lot of other MMOs. He enjoys playing more than one MMO, can't we?
I've played FFXI since 2003 NA launch and I love it as well. I'm still amazed at how unpopular it is on the internet to like more than one game in a genre at a time. I don't care who makes these games as long as they're fun. It doesn't always have to be Coke vs Pepsi 24/7.
(But seriously, Pepsi is a weak, sickly sweet wannabe copy of Coke. Coke forever, baby!)
