Potential immersive adventure companionship :)Follow

#1 Dec 16 2013 at 7:08 PM Rating: Excellent
Hello fellow FFXIV ZAM community,

I have been a long time ZAM forum visitor since 1.0, as I have always appreciate the overall maturity and helpfulness of this community. After reading several posts here and noticing some players voiced their desire to have a sense of “adventure” when playing FFXIV:ARR, I decided to write this post with the hope that:

(1) We (my in-game companion and I) can learn more ideas on how to enrich our experience adventuring in Eorzea with like-minded players, as we share our “outward immersive” approach with the community.

(2) Reach out to those who have been or want to approach FFXIV:ARR in way that is similar to ours, and perhaps one day expand the companionship so that we will be able to adventure in Eorzea together with more like-minded players :)

P.S. Before I continue, I just want to apologize for having a potentially super lengthy post.. I wanted to be as detailed and thorough as I can, so people who really share the same or similar frequency as we do can identify that "hey! this is exactly what Im looking for within the casual/RP/laid-back demographic!" Thank you for your understanding :)

So what exactly is our play approach? To sum it up:
We thrive to create a sense of adventure throughout our time in Eorzea, by immersing ourselves in the world, and come up with non-traditional approaches to help us constantly experience the game in a challenging & engaging way.

A more detailed description of our play approach via my Lodestone blog:
http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/character/2990579/blog/157336

Some additional examples to help better understand our approach:

(1) We take time in exploring each and every area/region that Eorzea has to offer. We get excited and spend time enjoying and appreciating newly discovered point of interests such as a ruin site, an abandoned temple or a scenic location for us to camp out on.

(2) Character progression and gear optimization is something we always put on the back burner, as we want to thoroughly enjoy what FFXIV:ARR has to offer for years to come. Draco and I have been playing since launch in a daily basis, and our highest class/job level at the moment is at 38.

(3) For immersion sake we do not let the main storyline dictate our “journey”, since many of those main story quests often direct players going from one corner of Eorzea to the opposite end repeatedly. Instead we treat the main storyline as “side-quests” that we do as we travel and explore a certain area/region.

(4) We find ways to make non-endgame contents challenging and engaging. For example we love to seek out all FATE bosses that aren’t been farmed by FATE exp parties, and fight those bosses with just the two of us.

For those of you who were willing to read everything til this point.. thank you for spending time reading it …!

If you aren’t interested at all in what you just read.. I’m sorry I wasted your time :( but I still appreciate you reading this post..! and best wishes to you in your journey in Eorzea! :)

For those of you who have been doing something similar... please share what are some of the unique things you do to help the immersion and having that sense of “adventure”!

For those of you who are somewhat interested in how Draco and I play FFXIV:ARR and like the idea of maybe joining our companionship.. see below!

From a general game-play perspective, if you enjoy at least half of what I described below.. then our companionship may be a great fit to you

- You love to enjoy the beautiful sceneries in-game
- You love doing emotes to help breathe more life into your character.
- You are very interested with the lore and stories of Eorzean people/place/culture/history.
- You like to immerse yourself in the world of Eorzea, thinking you are living and breathing in this world when you play.
- You love to take in-game screenshots and enjoy screenies taken by others.
- You are the type of player who put way more emphasis on the journey itself, rather than the destination. (Ex: What I get out of the dungeon run is not as important as if we had a good time together)
- You take time to listen to what NPCs have to say.
- You pay attention to the environment change often (day/night/rain/snow storm), and like the idea of doing things in reaction to the weather/climate change (resting at night, run for cover when it rains, etc)
- You get excited with the idea of having a guild/personal housing to relax and socialize in-game
- You find yourself stopping to view the breath-taking sunrise/sunset often

If you feel like what I described is something you would be interested in.. please reply and let me know!

Again I apologize for the super long post... Thank you for taking time reading this!

Hrm... it sounds like role-playing, only... not... kinda.

Though what you describe does has some merits. This game, after all, had alot of detail and work poured into it. It does deserve the admiration you seem to show. I am also particularly fond of the weather element. I sometimes have an urge to seek shelter from the rain when I'm crafting in quarrymill, but thats half because im paranoid the rain will break my synth for some reason.

And admittedly, I do sometimes stare in awe as the sun goes down at that perfect moment in Eastern Thanalan. It was indeed extremely well done.

On the other hand, I do also put a bit of focus onto the endgame aspect, so it's not like I can say I'm right there with you at that level.... but I most certainly understand where you are coming from :)

It sounds like role-playing light, for sure. This is the one thing I find missing in FFXIV: sense of exploration and adventure. There are beautiful areas to explore, but there's hardly any reason to do it.

Though, I've very excited about the upcoming treasure hunts and beastmen quests, and hope they take us all over the world.

@Swiftskye & Louiscool - Thank you for your kind words! :)

Haha I do agree that our approach does have a lot of the RP-flavor~ to make that distinction, I would say our approach is a bit more out-ward/environment focused compare to the standard RPing, meaning we essentially are who we are as we play - we don't particularly role-play a certain type of character/personality, we also don't have that much of a character background story to focus on, we just.. focus on enjoying what the world of Eorzea has to give us :)

And no worries at all for saying that this approach doesn't fit your style :) I fully respect that everyone has their own unique preference and desire in what we want to get out of our MMO experience ^^ I am fully aware that this is probably like finding a tiny needle on the vast deep ocean floor... but hey it doesn't hurt to give it a try and cast that net just in case ;)

There are certainly many others out there who I am sure share your view - half the challenge is finding them. Are you currently in one such FC/Server? I ask because I've seen you mention an in-game companion, though for some reason I'm assuming your NPC Chocobo companion, rather than just another person who you journey with in game. If that's the case, then that level of commitment is indeed deep! I'm not overly familiar with the concept of RP, but I know the basics...ish. It seems that you create a unique background for your adventuring companion on a much deeper level than most would, thus making your journey through Eorzea that much more memorable. It's certainly unique! As you said - A sort of environmental RP, twinkled with a bit of NPC RP/Lore. I've never heard of this style before, but again... I'm not overly familiar with it. You may yet be on the dawn of a new RP era! ^^

Alternatively, you could have been referring to an actual person... which I'm starting to think you were, after reading everything I just wrote, in which case I just made a fool of myself, while simuntaneously projecting a possible new RP style to look into! xD

Welcome to the forums, btw! (As a poster anyway ^^)

EDIT: Just clicked your link. Indeed an actual person... haha, silly me. xD

Oh dude, when exploring the world for the first time, I regularly walked, not ran, because it felt more immersive.

@Swiftskye - LoL yep yep my one and only in-game companion right now is an actual player ah haha.. xD though i do treat my minion pets as living & breathing companions with me as well :3

And thank you for the welcome! ^^

@Louiscool - Yes I do strongly encourage occasional walking instead of running all the time for a nice change of pace~ and its sooo fun to see your minion pets (Carbies also!) switch between running & walking animations, so adorable!!

We finally did it in this wonderful Starlight Celebration season...! We bought our own little FC house!! \^^/

http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/character/2990579/blog/694080/

It was a lot, a lot of hard work for a small 2-person company (well technically we have 3.. but we got a munchkin who's always away at the front line of Mor Dhona so ^^;), especially for my in-game companion who had to craft non-stop for us to get to rank 6, since we don't do FATE grind..

But I gotta say for players like us who do immersive play... having our own FC house was really a dream come true..! We have spent all of our time since we becoming a home owner planning/decorating/remodeling our house, and we just spend rest of the time relaxing at our front yard enjoying the beautiful scenic view of Lavender Bed (Gridania FC residential area)

If any of you here are in Faerie and ever need to find a place to rest/relax as you travel to Gridania, you are always welcome to pay us a visit! We have create a little guest room with a nice comfy bed near the window, and I have stuffed our fridge (company chest in ze house hah) with enough stuff to cook you almost any meal you desire~ ^^

Nice post YumieAC. You clearly appreciate Eorzea and all it's wonderful detail in a way that creates the most enjoyment out of the experience. It's so relaxing to play in the way you are describing.

Also, congrats on the House purchase!

Any chance you are on Hyperion? I sure would like to meet more players with your casual approach. It's pretty easy to get caught up in the rush of battle and advancement when everyone you know is constantly pushing forward. Some low-stress adventuring would be most welcome.

Thank you Gnu..! Unfortunately we are in Faerie T_T Who knows maybe we'll run into each other some day~!

To be honest with FFXIV:ARR really geared toward solo friendly/end-game focused, even players like us were struggling a bit at first in finding the.. right groove? in immersing ourselves... Like we were so bumped out when we learned there's no actual ferry/airship ride.. cannot duo or party when doing major story quests... almost all contents except dungeons and a few FATEs can be easily plowed through via solo...

But on the other hand, there are so many little things in Eorzea that's just so wonderful for us to enjoy... Like for example I just found out that whenever we /clap, our wolf puppies and coeurl kitties would stop whatever they were doing and came to us...! xD and once most players/FC are able to purchase a FC house of their own, you'll find out how awesome the housing decoration features/options that is available!! Like you can use partitions to create spacings and your own rooms, etc..!

I would like to join your cult, but I am currently a member of another.

Joking aside, I think what you strive for is what most everyone wants from XIV, just with a lot more intensity. I can't tell if it's just that you're a writer who articulates well, or you're really that gung ho about becoming one with Eorzea. Borderline creepy, but a well written post none the less Smiley: sly

Its personal preference and all, but yes we need to educate WoW players that this is OUR game, these are Characters and not Toons. Time to beat that into them one at a time.

Ah haha you may actually take out "borderline" if you actually see us play in-game.. xD

Like for example my inventory bag is always packed with food ingridents to make sure I can cook my companion a wide variety of meals during our major trips (scrambled and/or fried eggs & bread + orange juice for breakfast... marmot/antelope steaks + salad + lassi for dinner, etc.. and I try to make different things to eat every day xP ). If we run out of meat we would literally spend days (in-game) fishing in nearby river/ocean and cook our seafood near ze campfire.

I believe someone else has mentioned this here already.. but your wolf pup and coeurl kitty will actually fight with you whenever you engage a mob! XD

I really really hope that they implement these cute little features for all the minion pets we have.
