What is "this" you ask? The community outside the game of course.
I'm not saying that FFXIV's community is a special case as that's not true in the slightest. This is what MMORPG communities have become for better and for worse.
No matter which forum you go to, the people there exist to suck all the enjoyment and fun out of the game for everyone that dares to step inside.
Why the game is dying, why it is being run to the ground, how the devs just don't get it... you name it, the forums are ******** about it.

You're right, that should do the trick. But I like browsing the forums as well as taking part in the discussions. There's some valuable information to be found, both from the players and the devs. For the majority of the time it is a playground of many sad individuals with an agenda though.
I'm enjoying myself, playing the game as it was intended to be played. I will enjoy it even more once 2.1 hits in a few weeks. I've my fair share of issues with the game but if you remove all the hyperbole, there's little dealbreakers to be had there. The game hits my buttons in a totally different way from how FFXI did (a game with its own fair share of issues indeed). The in-game community that I am in contact with is nothing but oblivious to any "problems", it's all quite neutral. Warrior's aren't in a high demand but that's about it.
Once I go to the forums, though, I am hit with a constant stream of complaints stating why I should not be enjoying myself and the design choices by the devs. Why the weekly lockout timers are the devil (even when the demographic I am in benefits from these lockout timers immensely). How we are not getting enough content when I will be hard pressed to have caught up by the time 2.4 hits the servers.
Even though it doesn't concern me it can be demoralizing. It is noticeable. When I am in-game, I find myself thinking how much this game has given me so far. When I browse the forums, I start to get annoyed by all the "problems" in the game and its future.
I could defend the game but that doesn't change the fact that I just wouldn't like playing it as much as before.
The lesson to be had here is: don't go to the forums if you want to keep liking the game.
Ps. I'm not including ZAM forums in the list as I haven't browsed here in a while.

ZAM forums is a breath of fresh air compaired to everywhere else. I rarely see any whining and people are always helpful.
I don't post much but I do read alot of the threads here.

Yeah the hate thread thing really isn't tolerated here (criticism =/= hate). If someone is done with the game they generally just leave. It's a pretty cool community for the most part.
As for everything else, I agree. Most people suck, but that's life.

Do you even internet? Everywhere there is a comment form to type in, there's an army of trolls spewing bile. This is not unique to FFXIV. If you're quitting FFXIV over this, then you should stop using all devices you own with screens for the same reason.
Edit: Have you tried the FFXIV reddit page? I've found it surprisingly helpful most of the time.

I would further posit that every possible opinion is typed out somewhere - whether the author actually holds that opinion or not is irrelevant.

I think back when XI was barebones and we didn't have anything like a quests with markers and icons for maps to guide us along. Thankfully, there was a fantastic community. Even though I didn't start playing until 2005, there was a lot of the game available to me at that time. There were times in my adventuring where I would be doing a quest with a lot of steps and really think back to the people that helped provide that information in the various wikis and how much help it served. It honestly impressed me how the community performed that.
The thing that excites me about being part of the ZAM forums, with this game in particular, is that this game is still fresh and and it's fun to think how this game will look in 5 years. I'm excited to be a part of a community that maturely puts information together and provides good and helpful advice. To me, I'm going to enjoy looking back on how noobishly I played my job yet turned to you guys for help and was set straight. And I can't certainly wait to be helpful to another person in the future.

Well the karma system aside ZAM is alright.
I try to ignore the karma system as much as possible... and it's greatly improved my experience on these forums. (And somehow improved my karma rank too, go figure!)
The karma system is like fight club: the #1 rule is to not post about your karma.
Don't quit over that. I have a great FC in game and only rarely (like 1/20 runs) find an idiot in Duty Finder. The overall community is pretty good, if you stick to the right circles and make some friends. That's what I'd encourage you to do. I vist ZAM and Reddit, but almost never the official forums anymore. Its all just battles, complaint threads, and whining. On ZAM and Reddit, I've started to filter my reads and only click something that is a helpful hint, walkthrough, guide or funny thread.

For news, I used to read Huffington Post, CNN, Fox News and others just for views all over the political spectrum. I've basically stopped. I'll still go there, but read the headlines only because the comments would just drive me insane. The internet has given everyone a voice (which is good) but most people have an established opinion on the issues and aren't willing to listen to other views. If you have an opposing view you are shouted down in a 1000 post explosion of basically what amounts to hate speech. Most people would never dare to talk face-to-face to another person like they write online, but the anonymity allows that. No one cares anymore. Basically, its "I'm right, you're wrong, go away."

I'd say if someone is going to quit a game they should quit because the company failed to deliver on their promises, made several 180s on previous statements, or straight up released ambiguous, unhelpful, or misleading messaging for stuff which lead to reasonable assumptions (yes, they exist) and then it turned out it was something completely different.

It really should be: Don't take the trolls seriously. The negativity can get heavy and unnecessary but you got to learn to tone them out. And it's to be expected that the official boards is heavy on the negativity; thats why there is harsh limitation on posting abilities.

I would amend it to be: don't go to forums hosted by the game's publisher. It's too easy to find out about and make an account to post, which leads to a lot more trolling. Even if I don't take trolls seriously, the high percentage of trolling makes it difficult to find anything worthwhile.
If people have to go out of their way to find out about a forum, that tends to weed out a lot of the riffraff.

Haven't been on Allakhazam since I played FFXI years ago, and remembered it recently. Community is night and day compared to the official forums.
I wish they would close the official forums already. I've not seen this much e-bullying anywhere else before.
You make a reasonable suggestion, and it not only gets shot down for no apparent reason other than people wanting to be ***** because they can be, you yourself also get assaulted by them and the droop of sarcasm on every remark would make anyone without a decent amount of resistance to it rage in anger, just like they intended most likely.
I mean, XIV Endgame is bad. Toxic, Rude, Unreasonable but still doable sometimes if you get lucky on members.

You're right, it's not the standard because people don't do it. But as per svlyons, it sure as hell should be one.
You can replace the word "fun" with "entertaining" or "interesting" if that helps. The actual process of tapping a resource node may be dry, but what you get out of it is what makes it interesting (things that you find valuable).

On a tangent I wish things you got out of those nodes were interesting or valuable. Servers may vary but on Gilg. it's guaranteed junk for pennies, unless you're talking about gold... maybe... depends on the day. Sad that's not even reliable. Fishing on the other hand... I think it's semi RNG vagueness has helped it ward against a complete market crash.

That said there are problems with this game, it aint perfect and neither is any other game, there are always things that need fixing.. Yes there useless ******** going on but not all of it is... If it aint brought up they dont get fixed.
The longer I play the more flaws I see. Like the markets should be more like FFXI so you cant see what others are selling for. This would help with so much undercutting. The market is broken and even though crafting is fun it pretty much is useless cause very little sells for much. In FFXI I remember cooking and wanting to get to yag drinks or rollenberry pie or meat mithkabobs etc to make money. I have no goals in crafting other than to get too 50... the crafting stunk in FFXI but at least their was a reason to do it other than just to do it.
Why cant we decorate our rooms or add furniture? This could help woodworking and botany.
