Right when I get home from work.

Given how often they have maintenance, it'd be nice if they move the times around so the same people aren't always "inconvenienced"

To be fair that's very much off peak hours based on the time they run the company (JST and PDT). Someone will always be inconvenienced. Always.

That's the same time. 4AM on the 12th in GMT is 8PM on the 11th in PST.

Ah that explains it then. I wish I had realised though, I like to log-in before I go to work and do the provision quests if I can (and am up early enough). Never mind.

Yes that is true, but "someone" doesn't mean it always has to be the same people. I can usually only play from around 10PM-1AM PST & every single one of the numerous maintenances the past 2-3 weeks has cut my time short.

This is the first MMO I've played since I quit XI in 2006, is maintenance every couple of days a normal thing now? I don't remember XI or 1.0 being this bad, but their priorities were understandably different after the disaster of 1.0.

Only in this game.

Every other mmo in existence has maintenance once a week, usually on Tuesdays. Except EVE Online, which has one hour maintenance every day ( only because it hosts all of its players on one massive server cluster).

Every other MMO except the other one made by SE(FFXI), which is kind of important in context as it's the same company. It's the way SE does maintenance and has been since 2003. Basically, there is no set schedule, but it will ease up as time goes on. There will probably be entire months when we'll go without downtime (much better than WoW, SWTOR etc.). As the game is new and they are ironing out issues though, there is going to be some maintenance. You should also expect downtime after major version updates as they patch in hotfixes.

Anyone who's used to maintenance in XI will find it's the same approach in XIV.
