Question about MateriaFollow

I am new to the game as you can see by my number of postings. I am seeing a lot of discussions about converting items to material and adding material to an item.

How is this done? I have not crafted much yet but have a few to 10 on one of my characters. Is this an ability that comes later or did I miss something?

There are 3 small quests near Black Brush that allow you to convert and meld.

As far as I know:

You can acquire the ability to convert gear to materia at lv 19 DoW/DoM job
You need to be level 19 in one craft to undertake the materia attaching quest.
Level 19 is the minimum level you will need to be to attach materia, most items will require you to be higher.
Each item requires a specific craft to attach materia to it. It's the same as the craft/level to repair the item.
After level 29 in a craft you can attach materia to armor that have no empty materia slots, but the chance of failure is high.

To clarify, after getting Advanced Melding, you can attach materia beyond the guaranteed, 100% success rate "green" slots, up to a maximum of 5 total materia. But that requires that the item has green materia slots to begin with. Gear that does not have those green slots cannot have materia melded to them, even with Advanced Melding.

Just curious: does gear with a red materia slot mean that the materia is not effective?

You will also need an equal number of "Carbonized Matter" to Materia you want to meld. This can be gathered or purchased on the Market Boards.

Gear with red materia slots means the materia was attached without an actual slot in the armor for it with Advanced Melding.

Domfrancisco already answered your direct question. If the effectiveness of the materia is reduced by the item's stat cap, that stat itself will show in red text.

You will likely see "VIT + 0".

what does it mean if it has cracked materia in it? Can I remove it or other materia if melded on?

IIRC tha calamity salvager npc is at 12-13 in Ul'dah, Steps of Thal. You can exchange your cracked materia and items with cracked materia melded through him.
