XP Farming sheepFollow

So I was part of a fate group in Ceorthas - Dragonhead when a discussion broke out over /shout about people farming sheep for experience. Some of them claimed that the xp was considerably better than the fate farming in this area because there is no downtime and others stated it was a **** move because people wanted to farm their mats. Also they stated the only real way to get enough mobs tagged to be worth it is to be in a party with a lot of BLM and SMN. Unfortunately nobody was forthcoming with locations, and searching google and these forums I haven't come across anything along these lines. Is anyone familiar with this form of leveling? Advantages / disadvantages?

I don't know about the xp being better, actually its below avg, but I did lvl my Arc and Arn 36-39 off them but that was because I needed to get my Wvr to 42 and fleece is expensive as ****.

Problem is since fleece is so pricey folks are there just to get it for AH/$$$ purposes so its best to find a time there is not a lot of folks.

I spent a lot of time in Coerthas doing FATEs around Dragonhead a few days ago and never saw one in all my running around. Where do they even spawn?

Around the southern entrance of Camp Dragonhead is the only place I've seen them. There is also a levequest that activates near the Raw Jade mining points that spawns Karakul, you see people doing it all the time - probably for that reason.

This. I haven't even seen them.

Edit: Solomon answered before I finished posting. Thanks

Oh ok, so it's the Ornery Karakul or w/e?

I've seen those. I knew they dropped skins, as I have a few, but didn't know they dropped fleece too. No wonder they're over farmed ><

So, SE was trying to fix Fleece farming to make it easier for people to get these for Weaving... and they broke it instead?

By making it harder to get mobs for farming because everyone is killing them for the exp now?

I thought they just added mobs. I hadn't heard of them changing the amount of exp you get from them.

Seems like one of those problems that'll resolve itself once the new patch smell fades. Some may be trying to multitask EXP and moneymaking at once, but depending on how many SE actually added, you can figure potential fleece production is up significantly and will eventually lower once these people decide to sell.

Partly curious what they did to Diremites, though. Just made it sound like they respawn faster.

more sheep can be found NE of Dragonhead. A FATE where you kill Orges happens in the area. You have to run up and around to get to the spot. I saw 5 there.

You can't miss them quite a few lv 37 black sheep around lv 37 white wolves southwest of the Ogre belly cave entrance . I had a little laugh when I first saw them black and white, sheep and wolves living together in the snow.Smiley: smile

I think the OP is trying to start a discussion about whether or not chain farming mobs in general is good for xp chains, using sheep as an example. If sheep are not a viable option, what about chain farming other mobs in a party setting for xp, like in XI? I too heard it was a viable option if you keep the chain going and have a good sized party, but I havent tried it.

In this case, I don't think the mobs are numerous enough to make a large group chain party work. On the EXP end, it'll be woefully inadequate compared to FATEs or even dungeon grinding as the few spots I found while poking around Coerthas were maybe 4-5 sheep tops and couldn't respawn fast enough to match my kill rate. In any instance of party chain farming, you're probably going to need a dozen mobs within close proximity and a dedicated puller doing nothing but bringing in 1+ to kill. I'll just say a crude rule of thumb would be to add +1 mob level per party member, but this obviously gets difficult in the late-30s and early-40s due to lack of level 50 or higher open world mobs..

I can definitely see the merit to this early on. Where simple monsters give you 200-300 exp per kill, and where a FATE gives you perhaps 4k exp at most.

I'm pretty sure once you reach coerthas and get 10k to 40k from some of the 1-2 minute lasting FATEs, there's really no point to this anymore.

Still, this whole exp mentality has been happening ever since XI. People absolutely refused to kill anything but the Incredibly Tough monsters, which netted the party 600 exp in a chain. While they could have simply been mass-killing lower level monsters for 200 exp per kill, just 10 times as fast. It wasnt till the later years that they finally realized that "Oh, we make more exp just killing trash".

Thanks to both posters for the spawn info! I will be heading back up there after my clear cutting for flax under Camp Tranquil lol

If you are soloing the sheep, in one of the good spots, the sheep could give decent exp/hour. At level 40 each sheep cave me 250exp. The only problem is I was never alone at each of the big spawn spot as there were people there farming for fleece (easy to tell, if they are lvl50, they are farming :p).

If you are in the area and in need of levels, the best would be to join a FATE party. I assume these happen on NA servers. Up until yesterday there could be 3-4 full FATE parties running around (xfers, didnt seem as many people in the area last night). In a FATE party you get cred for killing the target mob(s) and usually the max reward at the end of the FATE (10k+). If you do the 3 part one, you easily get 50k (there is an escort, and fight a bunch, and then a big dragon to end it [it alone will give 20k]).

Svara is the dragon and the quests all have it in their name. It starts at the north gate of Dragonhead. You also get the Ring of Fire achievement. There is another one that gives about 25k in that area as well. I think i've had the most fun fate farming in Dragonhead. Lots of boss battles.

From what I have read: the three parts to Svara give live 8k then 10k then 20-25k. The Eyes Have It is the other big one with +20k and a minion. Along with the dozen other FATEs that pop around there.
