Who uses a "gaming" mouse for ffxiv?Follow

I bought a new mouse that has 11 programmable buttons on it. My intent was to map some of my most heavily used macros to those buttons - cure 2, regen, esuna, etc.

My macros use a mouseover targeting setup (with standard targeting in the macro for backup).

My problem: In the heat of battle, I am unable to consistently hold the mouse over someone's name while at the same time trying to press a little side button on my mouse without slightly moving the mouse cursor. This results in many times putting spells on the wrong member or no one at all.

My next iteration of probable solutions will be to map spells like Cure to keyboard keys, and put only self targeting spells/actions on the mouse, since it appears I do not have the ability to hold my mouse cursor steady while clicking an accessory button on my mouse.

I'm just curious what other people do. I konw a lot of people have the mmo mouse with 12 buttons on the side (Naga or G600). I can't image how its possible to rapidly and consistently click all of those buttons with accuracy and at the same time keep the mouse steady. I'd love to know what setups work best for other people.

I'm now considering something like the nostromo speedpad for easier non-mouse-hand binding.

I've had a Naga for years, and would cut anyone that even looks at it funny. The first week or so was like you describe, but the more you use it, the better you'll get with it. Like all things had has a learning curve when new, but gets better with time/use.

I use a Naga razor mouse (12 buttons on the side + 2 buttons next to the left button) and I couldn't play any MMO without it. I bought it about 2 years ago when I was playing WoW casually. Took me about 2 weeks to get used to it. I had problems using the right buttons on the left side of it because they are close to each other. And then, I got used to it.

I have 19 keys mapped on my mouse. You can set the 1-12 buttons on the side to be equivalent to the numpad, so you have so many buttons mapped without needing to use ctrl + 1 or alt + 1 to use abilites important in fights allowing me to keep moving while using all my skills (I play tank).

I use ctrl +1 to ctrl + 9 for marking targets and switching gear set.

Trust me for 90 bucks (had it for over 2 years), the investment is TOTALLY worth it. You just need to get familiar with it and then you're gonna love it!

I have a g600. My side buttons are all bound to hotkey combos not normally used on my keyboard, to maximize availability.
The thumb buttons are bound to skills based on how quickly I need to access the skill, and how hard the button is to hit.
Only the front 2 rows are really quickly accessible for me; the mouse is quite large for my hand.
The hotspot buttons on top are hit/miss, so I bound them to Lclick/Rclick as well, to avoid misplay.

I found macros to be too unreliable, even if you are mouseover'd, you won't know until it casts the spell on the wrong target.
It's really finicky, and in instances where people are constantly required to move + dodge stuff, not really safe to rely on.
I don't know WHM, but for me as SCH, the 2s delay is too much. Even when it casts correctly, there's a built in 0.5s delay associated with using macros after other skills.
The mouse buttons let me sync pet heals with my own really fluidly, so I just do that manually.

How do you not use macros? Or do you mean that you just drag the action icon directly to a hotbar, then bind it to the mouse button?

As for the mouseover, I have no problem if I am not trying to click side buttons while mousing over. I use the party player list on teh ride of the screen, not the actualy player since they may be moving around or covered by other mobs/players.

I didn't know about a built in macro delay - nor have I noticed.

I use a G600 and gave up about having spells on the side keys.

What I did was programing tasks that do not require pointing, like mount, sprint, enemy target left/right, jump, etc.

I have to say that the best friend of a gaming mouse is a gaming keypad, because those come with a joystick letting you handle the movement with your thumb alone, unlike keyboard movement which requires 3 fingers.

yes, the second. The mouse is set up as pictured, then I assigned them as hotkeys on the skillbar, but ones that wouldn't interfere with my normal hotkeys (centered around wasd).

I've no problems clicking the side buttons and not moving the mouse, but I found specifically with the g600 that I had to change the way I gripped the mouse. I used to play with a logi optical generic $10 mouse, which was great for what basically amounted to mouse acrobatics, in a palm grip. The g600 for me requires much more of a claw grip approach due to its size and relative immobility, which was a little weird to get used to, but I don't have precision issues anymore.

re: macro delay, I was referring to the skill queuing delay that macros are susceptible to or rather, can't take advantage of.
There's an okay-ish thread here explaining it: http://redd.it/1o55b6

Just out of curiosity, what are you doing with your other hand that you can't use it for keybinds? Smiley: sly

Its personal preference and all, but yes we need to educate WoW players that this is OUR game, these are Characters and not Toons. Time to beat that into them one at a time.
