1) is there any use for those pieces, except sell to NPC?
2) any way to fire a macro in hotbar 3 and above? ie, hotbar 1 is Alt+no (or just the no), hotbar 2 is Ctrl+no..

I think you are looking for keybinds? It's in the Actions and Traits menu.
EDIT: To clarify, put you macro into hotbar 3 and set a keybind to the action.

At this time we have not found any other purpose for the Allagan currency than to turn it in for cash.

While that may be true, I tossed out W A A A Y too many beastman coins early in FFXI to turn them in. I have like 40k worth of those little gold bags on my retainer right now. I would say I've turned over no more than 2k - 3k of them and that's only if I'm out and about and can't get to my retainer easily and need space.
NPC fodder or physical currency for those who might want to world transfer and avoid the gil cap. I've yet to find any super secret use for them and it's not like this game hasn't been good about telling you about things with tutorials and quest lines.

That is actually brilliant. I never thought about that. Would make those items really useful with a zero value drop (opposed to risking it buying an expensive weapon/armor on Server A and selling on server B)
