Important Notice to All Software Token Users (Sep. 19)Follow

#1 Sep 19 2013 at 7:33 AM Rating: Decent
I got this email from SE today, I basically says write down you emergency token password down, and now. Failure to do so and you're out of luck if something happens to your token
Quote:
*In the case you cannot perform an emergency removal of the Software Token, you will no longer be able to log in to or use the various services related to your applicable Square Enix account. <-- period

This e-mail has been sent to the registered e-mail address of a Square Enix account holder with a service account for FINAL FANTASY XIV. Please disregard this e-mail if you believe you have received this notice in error.
==========

This is a notice to all customers who use a Square Enix Software Token (Software Token).

If you are using a Software Token on your smartphone and decide to switch to a new phone, or you have deleted your Software Token application, you will need to use your Software Token’s Emergency Removal Password to remove your Software Token from the old device, after which you must re-register the token to your new device. If you are planning on switching phones or deleting the application, please be sure you have your Emergency Removal Password at hand first.

*In the case you cannot perform an emergency removal of the Software Token, you will no longer be able to log in to or use the various services related to your applicable Square Enix account.

How to confirm your Software Token Emergency Removal Password

(1) Log in to the Square Enix Account Management System.

Square Enix Account Management System:
http://sqex.to/KeD

(2) After you have logged into the Square Enix Account Management System, your Emergency Removal Password will be displayed under “Token Usage Status” below the “Square Enix Account Information” section at the right side of the screen.

*The Emergency Removal Password is a one-time password that changes after each use. After you have used it, you must log into the Square Enix Account Management System again to obtain your new one-time Emergency Removal Password.

Before you switch phones or delete the application, please be sure to follow the above steps to confirm and store your Emergency Removal Password in a safe place. After you have switched phones or deleted your application, this password will be necessary to perform the Emergency Removal of the Software Token registered to your old device.

I looked for the code last night and couldn't find it - was I being really blind or is it like trying to find your way around Ikea like everything else?

That only makes sense. Say you have a token, and decide to throw it away and use a new token, you have to deactivate the old token first. A token, either on your phone or physical, relies on being able to generate a unique and secure key. If you could so easily switch phones, why couldn't someone else just put the app on their phone and gain access to your account?

Seems entirely reasonable to me.

Are you using a physical or a software (phone) token? From my experience the Emergency Password could only be used/found while I had a Software token and not a physical token. They may have changed this or I was just blind when I had the physical token.

Oh it does seem to be for software tokens >_>

So what happens if we lose our physical tokens or they die? :(

I would guess you would need to contact support to have them removed. I don't know how often they die though the one I had from back in like 2009 still works today, I just always carry my phone and not my fob so I thought it was an adequate trade off. Also, those fobs can be quite easy to lose Smiley: lol.

I still have one of the original ten key fobs (won it here on ZAM, thanks guys!) and it still works fine.

The battery is supposed to last for five years, although some WoW players said theirs are still going past that (same company.)

They, the key fob ones, do last a very long time. The battery life is going off the notion that you press it once to generate the number and let it auto-turn off.If you press the button again and shut it off does increase the battery's life.

My husband and I use one of the tokens we got from the 1.0 CE, and its starting to show its age. The button, when pressed, doesn't always pop up with a number. You have to press super hard and sometimes hold down for a number to appear. Thankfully, the number is still sync'd with whatever algorithm runs it, so beyond the double/triple pressing of the button it works fine.

I have a feeling the reason they sent this out was because of the iOS 7 update, if anyone didn't save their emergency passcode and then the update failed and they had to restore their phone, they would be SOL without that code.

Actually, the email says that if you don't have your emergency password reset, you can still get access to your account after contacting SE and going through the verification process.

I still wouldn't want to deal with SE's customer service, but this isn't a "you can't play without this, period," kind of thing.
