There's not as much costumization as before in 1.0, but...

You could probably technically sub Thaumaturge abilities and call yourself a pseudo-Dark Knight, sub evasive things from Puglist and call yourself a pseudo-Thief. Cures from Conjurer already make you a paladin, but that's already in there and done.

There's really not a whole lot that a Gladiator could be. Maybe with some cures and stoneskin, Bio and a debuff extra or two you could think of yourself as a Red Mage?

I brought this up in another thread actually.

If you're leveling GLD, you're almost definitely going to be going PLD. As a Job, you have access to 5 cross-class abilities. That may sound limited, but seeing as PLD only has access to 6 in total, it really isn't.

Currently PLD has access to: Cure, Protect, Stoneskin, Raise, Mercy Stroke, and Foresight.

All of those have at least limited use, except for Stoneskin. Being a 3 second cast, you'll never get to use it properly on a PLD tank. You'd almost definitely get interrupted before you got the cast off. You could cast it pre-pull, but I still don't really see the point as it only absorbs 10% of your health in damage. That'd be gone after taking only a couple hits.

I'll be running with Cure, Protect, Raise, Mercy Stroke, and Foresight on my PLD for sure.

The Two main Off specs for Gladiator and Paladin are Conjurer and Marauder. These are the only two classes that Paladin can take skills from. However, Gladiator can take skills from pretty much every class.

From CNJ you will at least want to hit level 2 and pick up Cure. they made it stringer so now it is pretty good at low levels for GLA to use when soloing or in emergencies. After that it's up to you whether or not you want to raise CNJ further to get Protect, Raise, or Stoneskin. Protect and Raise aren't really that needed, and I don't think you would take either on Paladin since you will mist likely have someone that can cast them anyway. Stoneskin might be a good one to take, but it requires you to reach level 34 and it is a mana hog, or was in phase 3 (they lowered the cost of pretty much every spell so this may have changed).

From Marauder you are going to want their level 2 skill as well since it is a defense buff. i could see their level 4 ability being pretty nice too for a quick threat genereator that you don't have to wait to do a combo for. the last ability that might be noteworthy is mercy stroke at 26. i noticed several classes get a killing blow ability and this one seems like it would be useful to have for more threat at the end of fights. the other abilities don't seem to be all that useful with GLA's lower damage per swing than marauder.

Gladiator can obtain a much better array of skills than Paladin from other classes. Featherfoot and Second wind are great from Pugilist. Keen Flurry from dragoon is great to have, along with invigorate if you feel like leveling it up that far. Having an emergency instant 300 tp is awesome and has tons of uses for a tank. If you want some damage buffs you can grab Internal Release from PUG for crit chance or Raging Strikes from Archer for a flat damage boost.

Oh, and for Arcanist.. Eye For An Eye and Virus Might be interesting to use, however MP is very valuable to a gladiator and I don't know how much those spells cost.

You forgot to mention Skull Sunder. What do you think about it? I kknow GLA/PLD already has threat generators, but it doesn't require a combo to gain enmity. It could be a useful tool in parties, especially low level ones where everyone wants to do their own thing.

Unless it generated more enmity than Savage Blade, it'd be a complete waste of a slot. Skull Sunder is the exact same ability as Savage Blade. The only difference is that PLD can actually combo Savage Blade.

I would definitely consider it if it were an AoE ability, but with it just being single-target, I don't see the point.

I was thinking of possibly being able to flash, then Skull Sunder your primary target, hit it with Fast Blade, and then Savage Blade another target followed up by hitting another target with Skull Sunder. It could be a good source of indirect AoE threat for those Archer/Thaumaturge parties.

I know the uses are limited and fringe benefits at best, but it could be interesting. You are right though, I would much rather fill my GLA slots with Defense Cooldowns and by the time you get PLD you will have enough threat tools for it to be a non issue.

I just don't personally see me taking protect. Any Healer worth their salt will have it and in the case of CNJ/WHM it will have shell as well. I would probably take it while soloing, but even then I could just solo as GLA and have 10 slots.

Oh well, maybe Bloodbath will be more effective at higher levels.

Keep in mind that Savage Blade nor Skull Sunder have a cooldown. You could Savage Blade your primary target, hit Fast Blade, then Savage Blade another target, followed up by hitting another Savage Blade. To pull off the same combo as you mentioned in your post.

I'd say it's uses are less than limited, actually.

I did apparently forget about Bloodbath. It would be astronomically more useful than Skull Sunder.

If you have a guaranteed Protect, definitely bring Bloodbath instead.
