FFXIV Beginner/WoW refugeeFollow

First off, welcome.

From what I understand, any wireless keyboard should work with your PS3, but someone can correct me if I'm wrong. If they make a PS3 with more than 256 MB of RAM grab it, but I don't think they do.

FFXIV's classes are different from WoW classes in that your race and nation has no bearing on what jobs you can ultimately be. Also, the classes can branch into "jobs" which are more specialized and suited for group play. Your base class is more generalized, and suitable for solo play.

The only thing you can do to enhance the PS3 performance is to replace the slow 2.5" HDD with a solid state. The game will load faster, that's about it. I'd wait for the PS4 version to come out honestly.

As for similarities between this and WoW..
- The interface will make you feel right at home, though you may want to spend a little time with the UI editor, the default positions for things like actionbars are a little silly
- Questing works just like WoW
- Leveling up works like WoW too, depending on when you last played it. You gain abilities as you level, no need to visit a trainer or anything like that

As for major differences
- There are no specs. A minor amount of customization can be done through the bonus stat points you get starting at level 10, but it's pretty minor and the stats are simple enough that you can just pour your points into your main stat and be fine
- Crafting is way different, I recommend planning to spend some time with this if you want to pick up a craft or seven. It'll take some getting used to, but it's a lot more interesting than WoW's crafting
- Oh yeah, you can be every class on one character.. that's a thing. Starting at level 10 you gain access to the armory system that lets you change classes by changing main-hand weapons

There's way more for both categories too. The best thing you can do is just jump in and see for yourself. The game spends a decent amount of time teaching you how to play it, and while a lot of it will be old hat to an MMO vet, there are enough differences to make you want to pay attention.

Thanks for all the quick responses! Yeah, it does seem like there aren't many similarities between WoW/FF classes aside from some being DPS/heal/tank, etc. I guess White Mage/Conjuror will be my best bet for a healer class? I tend to gravitate toward heals/support.

Are there any compelling reasons to wait for the PS4 version? I didn't really want to buy a PS4. Sort of only interested in FF14, replaying some PS3 classics, and getting some of the upcoming titles like GTA 5 and FF13-3.

I got a PS3 recently and have no regrets. There's a lot of games from the past few years that I've missed on. Plus, between that and waiting until next year to play XIV because my computer can't run it, it's a no brainer.

If you decide to get one, be careful about the disk size though. Normally they're all 250gb+ but recently they released a cheap model with something like 12gb only. That might be enough for XIV but it's not exactly future-proof.

During this last beta phase, there was a lack of tanks for the dungeons due to people play the new Arcanist class. If you want instant duty finder hits, play tank/healer in that order, at least for the opening weeks of the game.

^ this. Most people don't want to responsible for the party's well being in that way so DDs (DPS) will always be more plentiful.
