Level Sync and Armor Level CapsFollow

I have a quick question from someone who has not played the beta, but did play FFXI. I have not seen this answered elsewhere so I thought I would ask.

In FFXI if I was level 40 and went into a level 30 area, it would remove all my 40 cap armor and if I did not have my level 30 armor in my inventory I was out of luck. Will this be the same with level cap in FFXIV:ARR or will it scale down the armor I am already wearing so I don't have to change?

I already assume that I will not be able to use the spells or skills I unlocked after 30 in those capped areas, I was just wondering about armor mostly.

No, your gear is not removed in a level capped area, there's just some sort of cap or adjustment on your stats. Similar to the way that GW2 and any other game with level capped areas seems to handle it.

In FFXIV your armor and stats are just reduced to the same point as if they were the level you're being synched to.

So if I'm level 40, then go to a level 30 F.A.T.E. and take part via the Level-Synch function, my armor will reduce all stats to level 30 levels... same goes for my base stats.

Edit: Unlike Guild Wars 2, I will not have access to any spells or abilities between level 30-40 because I am synched to 30.

That is good news. Having to carry an extra set of lvl 30, 40, and 50 armor and weapons annoyed the crap out of me in FFXI and was the main reason I stayed away from capped events.

Good to know for the gear, but when I got leveled down for a class quest, I most definitely did not have access to my higher level skills.

Except for cross-class abilities, which for some reason were not restricted by level. Odd.

At least, that's what I thought I saw.

One thin I would like to put out there is that when comparing lvl 30 gear and level 40 gear(with reduced stats due to level sync), the lvl 30 gear will have higher stats. Yoshi has mentioned that level appropriate gear will almost always be better.

I wonder if that's due to things like HQ gear. If you compare stats, HQ gear is effectively ~3 levels higher than whatever level it is listed at. But if that got synched down to a lower level, I'm sure that lower level has a flat number it uses that would be more like if you put on normal gear for that level.

They changed that in FFXI several years ago so that the gear you're wearing that was above the level cap would "scale down" in stats to comparable gear for the cap, though it wasn't clear exactly how the scaling down worked.

Was that really changed in FFXI? Last time I played, even when you were in low level areas, you wouldn't be adjusted. You could run around the starter zones and one-shot everything.
The only times I found I got capped was doing things like Promyvion or instanced content like CoP missions.
Does FFXIV really sync your level in open-world like GW2?

It makes me feel optimistic about the game to know that they considered this problem and took an intelligent measure here.

You were adjusted in XI when you level-synched a party or when you entered a BCNM or something with a restricted level.
This is the same in XIV. You'll only sync if you agree to it so don't worry.

Thanks, that's great.
I love feeling of dominance over bunnies in starter zones so I can be all like... "Ya bunny, I'm level 23! You'd better reco'nize!"
Or something like that.

I like to go back and *****-slap the goblins that picked on me at my lower levels. (Which in turn also helped the other players being troubled by them. I'm so nice like that.)

I just like being able to run through lower level zones and not worry about aggressive things annoying me.
