Japan Expo Yoshi InterviewFollow

I'm by no means a fan of the XIII series and have played them all... But the way I see one way this could go with lightning is a very fantastic thought so I'm sticking with it in hopes that it happens ;P

In saying that my hopes would be that lightning ends up being a portal to other FF worlds... Considering we have seen magitek armor, heard of the golden saucer, among other things this would be fantastic in my eyes but if not then I won't be to fond of this lightning appearance...

IMO

That was a great interview! Thanks for posting

I'm assuming the Dark reference was Dark Knight? What else could it be?

I agree that it is tacky to add Lightning like that in the game. It feels out of place, just like adding Darth Vader to Soul Calibur or Cloud in Eirgeiz (or whatever you spell that game's name). I suppose I will take it like Cloud in FFT, which wasn't bad actually and move on, not THAT much of a big deal really. It is just that it open precedence for similiar things in the future.

Way too many people are over reacting in here. No one knows the full context as to how she will be involved in the story.

If I were to take a guess? She'll be some side quest that ultimately rewards you with the bonus' we've been shown.

That was an interesting read, and helped curb my post-beta cravings for more ARR. Thanks for posting!

you don't even know the subject matter so why are you judging fool? from 1.0 to 2.0 we got SENT INTO THE FUTURE!!!! did you even think of that? opps, lighting accidently gets sent to our time and hangs for a sec, whats the big deal?

From what I understood, time passed until everyone resurfaced when it was safe again. I don't recall anything about jumping into some sort of time travel machine and being propelled far into the future. It seems like a decade or so passed.

The Lightning thing just sounds to me like an attempt to make the game more mainstream appeal than anything else. I'm indifferent really and I don't care one way or the other. It's not going to help or hurt XIV in my eyes unless it changes the gameplay somehow(which I doubt it will).

It's only been a 5 year jump. I don't really mind about them adding Lightning to the game in a small story arc. I doubt it will be anything really extravagent. I'm sure it'll be a fun little quest line with 2 or 3 quests and it'll be finished. The equipment wont be game breaking or anything. I see the items you'll get like the seasonal event items like others have mentioned. I have the santa and reindeer suits from 1.0. The only reason I took them out from my retainers was to be silly at times and maybe poke fun at an LS mate. It's all meant to be fun. If it's something that breaks your immersion, yo don't have to complete the quests.

I'm not a fan of Lightning or the FFXIII series, but I could care less if Lightning is added to XIV. If it gets more fans to play, it's good by me. If they can give a minor role and incorporate it into the storyline in a way that makes sense, I'm cool with it.

While I'm not a big fan of Lightning as a character, let just wait for Lightning to show up in the game before bringing the hate on everything.

I mean, for all we know, the writer might do a wonderful job of including Lightning inside the FFXIV story. I agree that it could also be done in a tacky way and "break immersion" but we'll get to that when we're here.

Myself, I more of a positive person, so I'm hopeful.

Let's just wait and see people.

Unfortunately they're right, its a marketing tactic and from what I heard they're being up front with that. Also.. the tactic works-- final fantasy tactics, kingdom hearts, and ergheiz all had final fantasy characters with major roles in them and final fantasy tactics and kingdom hearts-- were phenomenal games. Whereas Ergheiz was definitely at least enjoyable (imho.)

Ostia, about the meaning of Final Fantasy, we've had a thread on that before.

Disregarding the fact that you're grossly outnumbered in terms of what Final fantasy is. (As in for "final fantasy must always be the best, most innovative game evar"), what makes a "Final Fantasy" is totally the realm of subjective opinion on the part of the fan.

What makes a Final Fantasy in the realm of fact?
Square Enix slapping the title on it. Nothing more.

As far as those butthurt over Lightning - a peice of advice.

Stop being so possessive over things you have no control over. It's an unhealthy habit to have in life, especially on the relationship level, be it business or personal.

On the Limit Break Issue:

The Official boards already abuzz about it. They claim he doesn't listen, but what they mean to complain about is that he doesn't mindlessly obey. People tend to have a hissy fit when they get told no.

I found it very interesting that they chose to use Limit Break as an equalizer mechanic - from that perspective I feel it makes sense.

But as a counter-argument to that, nothing prevents them from making different graphical effects for the identical result for each job. Obviously that's not a priority right now, but it would be appreciated down the road.

I'll have to wait and see what he means about endgame difficulty and variance in quests.

Personally, my problem with Limit Breaks is Yoshi says "wait till endgame" to have specific use out of it, and his advice from 1-49 is push the button and just watch the pretty lights.

Not only does this sound demeaning (I know it isn't, but it can come across as that since I don't need 50 levels to figure out what a button does), but this also means the DD Limit Break are better than any other choice by default. It shouldn't be that way.

There are attacks and situations that a defensive Limit break can save you from - like in situations where you're healer is taking damage from multiple sources and the Mage Limit Break woulden't be enough to end the adds. But they won't be necessary to an organized group unless something goes wrong.

There are situations in which a healing Limit Break or a Defensive Limit Break can ease things in the fight significantly, however. Like if you want to reduce the damage/interrupt chance form the lamps in Manor or recover multiple possibly out of range allies in the To-To Rak boss right.

They're useful, but not a necessity, especially not to veterans. However, using them at the right time can also save and experienced group from a would-be failure.

I got some good use out of the Oh sh*t button as a cnj. Although, I didn't have to use until my first run in Haukke Manor. I was lvl 29 and didn't have cure II yet, and I just couldn't keep up with the amount of dmg going out with just cure. I panicked like crazy and hit it when my tank's hp hit single digit. I had to use it again later on in the run when a similar situation was going on, but I was able to do it before it got so bad. Haukke Manor was the first time I actually felt challenged being a healer in beta. It was definitely a thrill for me, but I'm sure once I get cure II it'll probably go back to being a cake walk I assume.

For clarification, the reason I panicked was because since I had never used the LB before I had forgotten which hot bar button I had set it to. So I fumbled around and luckily got it off before my tank bit the dust.

I agree with Yoshi on the limit breaks just being like powerful weaponskills and two hours. Those will lead to the scenarios he described. But I also don't see what's wrong with unique weaponskills only available during certain conditions. I'd rather see an introduction of the renkei system to ARR. That focuses less on individual power and more on party synergy.

As for the Lightning stuff people are going batty on:
Immersion is like medicine.
When it's unlabeled, has unknown minor side affects, cures or doesn't cure, it might taste bad to some people, it delivers the same effect to some.
When it's clearly labeled, has known side affects, it cures, it might taste bad to some people, it delivers the same effect to all.

If Lightning has a minor element and that is just a skin that might be introducing gunblades, I'm all for it.
If magitek armor is nothing but a skin, I can't ride them, shoot magic beams, fight in them, pilot in them, I don't want it.

SE could call the magitek, mechwarriors or magic metal dumpsters. As long as I get the functionality I want out of them it wouldn't matter to me personally. But magitek armor sounds so much cooler and final fantasy-ish.

Hey it's Final Fantasy! Not transformers online, it's not WoW, it's not my little pony. If they are going to use stuff from other games it might as well be it's own universe with different lore applied. I wish it was called Final Fantasy Online, an mmo that encapsulates the entire history of Final Fantasy. It's a franchise that has been around a long time. It has grandparents, mommies, daddies, kids, and grandchildren playing it. Guess what? The younger generation might not be familiar with the earlier FF and that's okay.

Technically, it's not her real name either. It's an alias she took in the military to try to harden herself.

Her real name is Clare.

Some people seem to forget that games are supposed to be fun. And others would seemingly ***** and moan if they won the lottery.

Disregard for lore can really ruin people's fun, especially RPG fans.

Just because something is fun for you doesn't mean it's fun for everyone. Selfish much?

I know right? God it just ruins the game sooo much for me that they reuse elements from other FFs. I mean, no other FF title reuses names or models.. or chocobos... or moogles.. or primals... or Cid.. or Biggs and Wedge... or... or....

Chill out, he said he would implement it in a way that works for the world, try to see what he means before the panic sets in.

In french, lightning is éclair, and the word "Light", which she also goes by, is "Clair." So her real name is still pretty much the same as her callsign Smiley: lol
