It's optional to use, so there's no chance of locking yourself out accidentally. If you do decide to use it, you'll have to enter the password on the token display to access your account in addition to your regular username and password.

Well the one-time password thing is a physical item that you register to your SE account. There is a code on the back that you tell SE, when attaching. It then says, OK, give us a password from the device. You click the button, enter that code, and poof! SE now has a predictable algorithm that will associate that device to your account and tracking one time passwords no matter how many times you press the button.

As long as you DON'T LOSE the device, you won't get locked out. If you don't connect the device to your SE account, you won't lock yourself out. Forgetting your password and locking yourself out like that is another matter.

To avoid losing your device and getting screwed, try the mobile app token.

If by some chance you lose the device or something.. SE has a pain staking identity verification process that will help you unlock your account again... It sucks but well worth it if someone trys to access your account.

I hope that answers yoyur question. I have like three tokens but disconnected the one I had because what if I lose it? Plus, if I get my account hacked.. I should probably stop playing anyway. That and my password would be very hard to figure out which means they were crafty and REALLY wanted my account... In that case, they can have it. After I cancel the payment and report it, of course.
