your losing passion because mmo's arent mmo's anymore. theyre console like action games with a chat room attached. except you dont die or lose progress.
thank blizzard. they brought inthe so called 'casuals' and once devs saw the money thta could be had by making games easy, non competitive, and instantly gratifying... they jumped the shark. now community is gone, immersion is gone, teamwork/codependency is gone.. all in the name of pleasing the kids.
mmo's used to be a hobby unto their own.. now theyre barely a genre. The only consolation ive had in nearly 10 years was seeing blizzard admit they ruined the genre, and brad mcquaid having the nuts to say the genre NEEDS a game that sticks to true mmo' tenets.
alas, 99/100 cash is king. which means unless those of us who find solace in the merits of a real mmo are wiling to pony up to compete with the masses of spineless babies.. it likely wont happen soon if ever.
GG xbox live/wow kiddies. Play the koolz mmoz, treat people like crap, get your uber lewtz and then cancel your sub. Or moreso cry about how subs are stupid so they all go f2p and take another step backwards.
meanwhile, passionate men who are driven by challenge will **** and moan until someone/anyone has the balls to realize a long term loyal sub base is > revolving door of the kiddie mart.
I digress.
I agree with your intent/underlying meaning. I disagree on the idea that mmos of now are not real mmos.
You still die in mmos and there is some kind of progress penalty.I can't think of one mmo right now that is too easy, non competitive, or instantly gratifying?(Maybe I missed the sarcasm?) The extremes of ten years ago(grind) and the extremes of today(no grind). Where is the middle road?
I want things to take as long as possible provided the content is there, no PADDING.
I want to explore and get somewhat lost, but not so lost I get stuck in game or have to look everything up.
I want to compete for rare claims in massive hunts, but not for every scrap all the time.
I want some instant gratification, but I also want things far out of my reach or completely out of reach.
I have community now, I want to depend on them sometimes but not all the time.
I want immersion with no bread crumb trails, zones, or lag. But not at the cost of extreme backlash in those areas.
It's not just money or WoW that has led to the close extinction of time sink mmos. It's also that people realize what is padding and what is not now. And it seems like developers all around either don't know how to stick to their guns or they go to extremes for casual or grindy.

While I agree with a lot of your post, I think most of your problems could be solved by joining a good FC and making friends with your guild mates. This way you could schedule runs with them at a time you all find convenient and you won't have to run with bad pugs.
I feel your pain though. I ran in to the same wall in WoW recently. I'm having a much better time in ARR though and my FC is awesome. It keeps me logging in whenever I have time.
**I'll also say that unlike some of the others here, I don't have a problem with having a queue system and solo leveling experience. With a family to take care of and 50-60 hour work weeks, it's the only way I'd be able to progress on my character leveling. I wouldn't be able to progress in a game like FFXI was in the RotZ/CoP days. I agree that there should be an MMO out there that caters to folks with more time on their hands though. Maybe Eve?

I agree with everything you said pretty much. But I would like a viable option for group experience outside dungeons as well. And by viable I don't mean just possible. I mean developer designed and good experience points.
