What's in a Name?
June 04, 2013

Greetings everyone!
Fernehalwes here!

OMG!!!!!!1!!!
It's less than two weeks until the launch of the third phase of the beta test!!!!!!!1!!!11!1!
OMGUBITB'IBi567'&ri6r76vB&r6rfUfr676r'IR&!B!&R!BBR&!BR!1

Yes, but you didn't come here to watch me get all hot and bothered, you came here for deep-fried, juicy, golden-brown nuggets of exclusive info (with your choice of barbecue, honey mustard, or sweet and sour sauces). Well, my friends, dinner is served.

I bring to you tonight...World server names!

(crickets chirping...)

I know, I know. Server names aren't quite as sexy as pics of...oh, let's say...a new job, but still, it's something, right?
(I'm not going to say that Yoshi-P's hoarding all the cool stuff for E3, but Yoshi-P's hoarding all the cool stuff for E3.)

And so, without further delay, your Beta 3 World names!

â–¼New Worlds (Enemies from FINAL FANTASY)

Group JP Group NA/EU
Atomos Adamantoise
Bahamut Behemoth
Chocobo Cactuar
Garuda Coeurl
Ifrit Diabolos
Mandragora Gilgamesh
Ramuh Goblin
Tiamat Leviathan
Titan Malboro
Tonberry Midgardsormr
- Ultros
- Cerberus (EU)
- Moogle (EU)
- Odin (EU)
- Shiva (EU)

â–¼Legacy Worlds (used for 1.0 data transfer)

Group JP Group NA/EU
Aegis (LEGACY) Balmung (LEGACY)
Durandal (LEGACY) Excalibur (LEGACY)
Gungnir (LEGACY) Hyperion (LEGACY)
Masamune (LEGACY) Sargatanas (LEGACY)
Ridill (LEGACY) Ragnarok (LEGACY/EU)

As you can see, servers are divided up into two groups: JP (recommended for Japan) and NA/EU (recommended for North America and Europe). Remember, just because a World is recommended for a certain region does NOT mean the World can only be joined by players from that region. The recommendations are based solely on the physical location of the World servers.

I personally pushed for a Fernehalwes server, but it was shot down because, unlike the cool kids Odin, Shiva, Bahamut, and the rest, I've not appeared in any FINAL FANTASY titles. We'll have to do something about that...

A recommendation is a far cry from segregation. Not to mention that it was asked for by a lot of NA, EU, and JP players.

I was hoping for an Asura server as well, haha.

Although I'm not sure if I want to use an EU server or not.

Hm, its nice to see that you can join servers from different regions some people play in weird times for their regions so its good to have that option.

35? I know we're being optimistic, but come on, they're basically guaranteeing a bunch of server merge/name change confusion crap.

Just some estimations here, nothing concrete but 35 servers... 20,000 per server would only be 700,000 players. I think that's easily reachable on launch, considering 1.0 had probably 300,000-400,000 on launch (600,000+ copies shipped) and that was without PS3 players. Also considering beta phase 2 had 250,000 players and there are still tons of people who didn't get into that. Will they sustain those numbers? Who knows... but better to have too many servers and consolidate later than not enough and have huge server queues.

edit: and in case anyone can't tell, I'd say those numbers are being fairly cautious.

Definitely leaving Aegis. Now I'm torn between Balmung and Hyperion.

And if they had cut the number of servers you'd be ******** that there's going to be congestion at launch Smiley: rolleyes

If there was too few, that would be a problem, but when every server has its own separate economy and community, 35 seems like too many for ARR...

At least the server merges and name changes aren't such a big deal with mandatory surnames.

The balance between Legacy/non-Legacy is also a little weird, and I noticed there's no oceanic or RP labeled servers (or is there?)

"Hi, I'm new and wondering which server is for (NA/JP/EU)? My reasons are blah blah blah."

Another thrilling game of "Can't win!"

I would venture to guess they based those numbers off of the pre-orders from the previous week. IMO they got the pre-order numbers and determined the amount of servers from there. Planning can only get you so far but from what I can see it was done with the best available information they had.

So your gut instinct is what they're going by to judge how many servers they need? This game is DOOOOOMED!

I bet Oceanic would go to JP or NA i guess. As for the RP yea i guess they should have that choice cause many people do RP i am not one of them though too hard on my nerves sometimes if i remember my wow days.
#22 Jun 05 2013 at 11:36 AM Rating: Default
The Oceanic region is closest to the JP timezone, but they would probably want to be labeled on top of an NA server for language barrier reasons. I guess they can update that, and an RP server later (don't care about RP myself, but people usually prefer an 'official' RP server over an unofficial community selected RP server).

What I'm wondering here is which are west and which are east-coast servers for the NA region. NA's a big place.. that distinction is kind of important.

I think that's going to be for the players to decide.

Personally, I have no problem making Balmung the Legacy server an "east coast" server. But others may disagree and think it ought to be a west coast server.

I loved in xi that there was a lot people from all regions on the servers (I don't think they were separated by region back then?) No matter what time I played there was always a lot of people on since the server had so many people from different time zones, and the auto translate was fun.
