Few questions for soon to be new playerFollow

#1 Sep 07 2008 at 9:47 AM Rating: Decent
Hello DAoC community. I just recently made a purchase through Amazon for the 5th anniversary edition and having never played the game, have a few questions for you veterans. First, what's the most populated server to be playing on now a day? I'm into both PVE/PVP and really like the whole RvR concept. What jobs are most sought after for parties, if any? Right now i'm playing Age of Conan but due to WAR coming out server populations have dwindled to nothing. I must say being in the Military and stationed overseas (Belgium), being on GMT +1 time I rarely see anyone on so am going to be cancelling my subscription soon and a friend of mine recommended this game to me.

in all the MMO's i've played, i've always been fond of the tank, blackmage, necro, or ranger classes. Any and all advice on these jobs in this game is greatly appreciated. My ingame name will be Masseic, I'm hoping to get this game the end of this week/early next week so hope to be seeing some of you soon.

Welcome to the game.

unfortunately, this game is also suffering greatly from WAR. Mythic makes both, so many players are now in the beta testing. This game really needs some sort of packaging to get people who are playing war to also try this game out.

I would recommend the classic servers since you are starting so late. There are more people there than anywhere else. IF the "origins" server ever does start up, then I would recommend you go there since everyone will be starting from scratch.

Almost all toons are viable. If you like archery classes, alb and midgards are the best. Each realm has nice casters, and there are also viable tanks in all 3 realms. Support classes, especially primary healers are always easy to find groups with (at high levels....leveling, you may have to do most of it solo).

I'd recommend trying out a few and seeing which you like most. This game is mainly an end-game, in that the real fun begins once you hit Level 50.

After you get started for a few days, feel free to ask some more questions, and I will be glad to help you. If you tell me which server you do end up selecting (and Classic servers are Bossiney, Ector and Lamorak), I may be able to help you out if I have a toon on that cluster.

Still awaiting the game but I have been doing extensive research and i'm going to be a Paladin and definately on a classic server. Just need to know which of the 3 to choose from and i'll be golden. Thanks for the reply, hopefully WAR doesn't crush this game too, I have faith in it, it's been out for a long long time.

It does not really matter much which server of the three you choose. They are all "clustered" together. The only area that is different is housing. The rest of the areas are shared between the three servers. Lamorak might be the most populated. Ector the least. The only difference that will really make is if you are Ector, talking to Lamorak people, you will have to use the Name-L or for Gareth Name-G to /send them a tell or invite them to a group.

I have albs on classic, so I will be happy to help you out. There is an /advice channel in game to ask questions, and although sometimes people don't answer, most of the time, someone will help you out.

sounds great, I can't wait to get the game. What are some of your IGN's so that I may say hi to you when the time comes. Other n00b questions, what is end game all about? Is it the standard MMO where it's all about raids and you won't get the best items for your class solo, you have to be in raids. If so, due to the game being out for as long as it has, how hard will it be for a newbie like me obtaining gear?

The best gear in the game is from dragon raids. they usually are done near non-stop, and take 6-15 people to kill. Usually, only certain classes are welcome on these raids...on albion, armsman, scouts, friars and clerics in general. That is not to say that on occasion, they may let another toon join, but it is good to have one of those types of toons, even if it is only used just for the raids.

I don't really play on classic anymore, but I could log on to help you once you get started. I have a toon on classic called Thuri-G. I mainly play on Devon now, but I do have crafters there to at least make you a few decent suits to help you get started.

It is really too early to worry too much about final gear. You may or may not switch toons after you start your paladin, and just learning the game should be your main focus the first few weeks. I would try to find a decent guild, in a decent sized alliance. this will help you find raids to go on. On classic, you won't have to worry about Master Levels or Artifact raids, so that is a plus.

I'd recommend trying out Thidranki when you hit the early 20's (thid is a bg for toons level 20-24). It will give you your first taste of RvR.

This website is not very popular for discussions and templates. The VN boards are by far more used. I'm about the only person here who answers questions.

I'll definately start looking at the VN boards. Ok last questions ( I hope) I see you wrote Armsman, just curious as to why this over Paladin? Are they just that much more uber than Paladins for tanks?

Also I know about the "Classic" cluster as far as it's pvp/pve but what are the other 2 clusters and what are they geared towards? By that I mean is there a strictly PVP cluster and the other is "care bear" PVE/Raids only?

Armsman do more damage than paladins, wear the same armor (Plate mail, which is the best in the game and only worn by paladins/armsman), and have more HP's, natural magic resistance, and stoicism (resistance to crowd control spells).

Paladins really only have two things over armsman, and those are endurance regen and celerity, which is great, but there are potions and other ways to get it.

As for the other two clusters, they are both similar to classic, except they include Trials of Atlantis areas, Master Levels, Artifacts and buff bots.

There are also two solo servers, which are as you guessed PvP only and PvE only. the PvP server is dead, and often only has like 15-25 people on. the PvE server is reasonably populated considering it is only one server.

I don't recommend Nightshade, (though it has some merits,) because it quite frankly sucks when going solo, and you'll level up like a tortoise in a snowstorm. It was about two years ago I started my Nightshade. everybody else in my area who plays has at least one level 50. I only have my level 35.
