Archers are now the fastest leveling class in the game. Almost all guides you probably used to read were written several years ago, and are no longer relevant. Archer classes probably sustained the biggest change of any classes in the history of this game. Now, for a beginner like yourself, this is probably a good thing. An archer's arrows are now more like a spell. You just press a button, and an arrow launches (there are a lot of choices as to what type of arrow/damage you do, so it is not quite as simple as I said), but you used to have to draw your bow, then release as well as buy arrows and keep a large suppply on hand.
Archers also get self buffs, which is great since I am assuming you will not have a buffbot (if you don't understand that term, let me know and I will explain).
for groups, most stealther classes operate in very small groups or solo. That is what those classes were designed for since they can run around invisible. They usually spend most of their time hunting/fighting the other 6 stealther classes in the game. A group can be up to 8 people, and most standard groups would not include an archer/assassin amongst them, although in a large zerg, people are usually not so picky.
The best thing about an archer class atm is the best loot in the game is farmed from the dragon of each realm, and archer classes are usually in high demand for that.
If it is what you enjoy, there is certainly fun to be had from an archer class. You can get potions that give you the buffs you do not already get from your class. Give it a try. Let me know which realm you start on and which server/cluster.
There are 4 types of servers you can play on, and I would recommend 2 of them to start with, but you can decide for yourself
Standard--These are the servers that include everything, including 3-way realm warfare. They have the Trials of Atlantis areas, and include things like master levels and artifacts (which do change how the game is played, and many do not like)
Classic--These 3 servers came about b/c some people hated ToA and how much time you needed to invest to make your character level 50 RvR worthy. Trials of Atlantis areas are not included, and there are no master levels, artifacts or buff bots on these servers (all casted buffs have to be casted in group, or they do not affect you)
PvE--All three realms work together and only fight NPC mobs. If you do not like PvP at all, then this might be where you would go.
PvP--Unlike the Standard/Classic server, this is not a 3-way realm war. Any player may attack any other player. hardly anyone plays this server. It is often in single digit numbers b/c it has a lot of flaws.
As for other melee style toons, almost all of them the styles are important. Each class is unique, and offers different challenges. You can create as many toons as you like and see what you like best. It is not a game you will master anytime soon. You have to be willing to invest a lot of time into it to learn what your class can do and what your role is, whether in a group, or soloing near a high traffic bridge). The battlegrounds I always recommend to new players to learn a little what RvR is like. RvR is what separates this game from all others.
