Friars are a fun class, but they are not very popular in true 8-man groups.
They tried to fix them, and they made them even better in PvE, but in RvR, they still don't really have a place. They still have too many things going against them to make up for the few neat toys they can bring..static tempest being something that alb could always use more of.
As for great RvR toons, sorcerors, cabbies and theurgists for casters. Heretics can do okay if you zerg it up, which as someone new to the game, is probably where you will initially head. Paladins can be okay, but that is usually only after they have their Master Levels done and higher realm rank so that their damage output is not a joke. Mercs are probably the best melee class in alb, and clerics along with sorcs are always welcome in a group. Caster groups are the norm in alb, so usually a group will have two clerics and 3 casters minimum..the other 3 spots can be just about anything but some toons will always be sought after more. You can get a group with just about any toon (except maybe necro) on just about any server, especially if you belong to a good alliance, but casters are the way to go in my opinion for alb still even with the changes to some of our melee toons, especially for someone new to the game.
Oh, and for where to level for aurulite at that level, try Glashtin Forge...there are two Instanced Dungeons in that area.
Another one you might consider if playing a ToA server is near Gem of Lost Memories and Orion's belt Encounter in Oceanus Hesperos. The harpies there drop scrolls which sell fairly well for those two artifacts..A level 35 toons such as yourself can get the artifacts and scrolls there (they are able to be activated) and you can sell the 3 of 3 scrolls you get along the way for decent cash. The harpies also drop friar gear. You will probably need help to do the encounters, but two people is all it should take.
