I enjoy exploration and soloing in MMORPGs. There's just this strange trend I've noticed: In MMORPGs, the more soloable they are, the less area there is to explore. World of Warcraft, for example, is soloable for the most part. However, the world isn't actually very big. So here I am, taking an extended break from WoW and looking into other MMORPGs.

My draw to MMORPGs is not because I can party with other players. It's a plus when I actually feel like grouping, but most of the time, what I like about MMORPGs is the fact that there's a huge world to explore, it's completely nonlinear, and constant updates add to the world. Plus, cities and towns are of realistic proportions, meaning the world feels more realistic.

How is DaOC with soloing? I heard it's a fairly old game, but I'm wondering if any classes in the game can level on their own, and if it's a grind to do so. I hated FFXI, and...anything similar will drive me crazy.

Almost any class can solo on its own, however some have more problems then others. Healing classes and bards and maybe even the archers classes struggle for instance more than other classes.

there are many classes which solo very well, vamps, bonedancers, warlocks (a little tough getting to 20-25, then easy sailing after that), paladins, heretics, friars and probably any tank can do well.

There are now instanced task dungeons and the quests in catacombs are cake and give good xp.

For someone new to the game, the area in here is very large, however, b/c of the change in the game, most areas are barren. You say you enjoy that to an extent, so that may appeal to you.

The best thing about this game is the PvP mode, not the PvE content. Grouping is possible, but usually easier to be in a guild or alliance to find others nowadays. I always recommend newer people to go to one of the three classic servers (Ector, lamorak or Gareth) b/c there are a lot of new people there, or people that came back to the game that had left earlier. you will miss out on Trials of Atlantis and the areas and encounters there, but on the classic servers, you should be able to find out if the game has appeal to you or not.

Another really good class to solo is the cabalist which is albion. I'm playin one at the momment, at times it will get boring becuse you souly rely on your pet and his buffs (which is the spirit spec) but besides that I love playing a cabby.
