Reaver is a good solo class if you want to melee.
Equipping a melee can be a pain though. It can surely be done, but I recommend hunting for drops you need and questing for items to keep yourself in decent shape. Alternatively you could hunt for nice loot and buy decent stuff.
The easiest route is to join a decent guild that passes items down to lowbies. Dont be a beggar, but most guilds have vaults with items guild members can have, or have guild nights where gear is given out to lowbies.
As for spec, you want soulrending at level, rest into primary weapon. If soulrending is lower, your spells will be resisted alot and the line will be pretty useless.
Flex weapons are nice, but you can autotrain it (dont put pts into it, and it will raise itself to 1/4 your level abouts). Slashing also autotrains. So either go crushing and autotrain flex, or put pts into flex from the start if you really want to use that weapon as you level.
You need to hunt spirit vulnerable mobs (undead, some magical) as you get a nice bonus against them.
Gothwaite is a good place to start, but you should move to where you can kill spirit vulnerables.
Another class to consider is Friar, if you want to melee solo. Little downtime, and a very fun class from what I hear.
