Professional Quality Character Artwork for MMO Gamers! (wasFollow

#1 Feb 26 2007 at 7:21 PM Rating: Decent
I just wanted to announce that I have a new site in development for the creation of custom MMO character artwork. I'm sure you've seen other sites doing this and maybe some of you are in the market for one of these. If so, I am a professional comic book artist, so the quality is top of the line, better than what you'd find at most other places offering the same and the prices are very low right now.

So if you're interested, please go to http://www.mmodraw.com and take a look.
Thank You!

Prices seem kind of high. What comic books have you worked on?

what machine?

do you have any examples of the quality you could produce?

are you the same guy?

if so do you still have my email and the character renders i sent you?

It's uses Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) technology to produce a good surface finish (light grey) with Alumide powder. All im doing is taking the info from the .dat files, dressing, then printing in 3d whats onscreen. Custom modeling jobs start at around $40,000 and up from there.

You can google SLS for good pictures, I don't have anything to show you, and im not the same guy.

Is that legal? Doesn't the artwork for the game have a copyright?

Yea, the poster does have a point, I can't legally give you this, free or otherwise. You can do a Google Search for Rapid prototype companies, at that point it's just a matter of opening model viewer, and exporting the 3d dat into a format they accept like .obj or .sto. They have lawyers who cna defend their actions, I don't =D

Just to respond to a couple of the posters here.

I've worked on Marvel Age: Hulk, G.I. Joe at Devils Due, Fused with Steve Niles at Image Comics, and others...

Somebody mentioned the prices being high... You have to consider the amount of time spent creating one of these. A detailed digital painting could take up to 30 hours or more to complete. Even a detailed pencil only piece could take 10 hours or more. Do the math on this "Start Up Offer" and you'll see that I'm not making a whole lot of money from this... I just need to get some content and customer feedback for site launch and thought this would be a good way to do it. Anyway... A lot of time and effort go into these and they're professional quality.

It is definitely understandable that somebody unfamiliar with this or somebody not desiring this service may look at the prices think it's outrageous, but hopefully I was able to shed some light on the reason why.

Any questions or anything, feel free to e-mail me through the website.

Oh... and to the guy that mentioned Hellboy, yes I am a fan... does that guy look too much like Lobster Johnson to you? I guarantee you that book is nothing like Hellboy, and that guy's nothing like Lobster Johsnon. Also, you should see all the design's Mignola ripped off for that Lobster Johnson look, it's a common WWII themed costume that goes back to books from the '40's.

To clear up something with the copyright issue somebody brought up. It should be noted that the characters do belong to their respective game developers. I don't claim to own the characters in anyway, nor should the user. I get paid for the artwork, not the characters.

I'm no pro, but I managed to make the cut for my high school's advanced art class back in the day where the teacher's won a number of local and state contests. To say he knew his stuff would be an understatement. Whether or not he was cut out for teaching is another matter, though. Good guy, nonetheless.

Back to the point, though, I'd sometimes just sit in class and watch him work on stuff after I finished my own projects. His pencil work was astounding and I can see how something would take 8 hours or more with that alone. Using pencils of various grade, consistently keeping them sharp, being careful not to smudge... definite labors of love and perhaps something that scared me away from seeking art professionally aside from seeing how the industry worked in college and just keeping it as a casual hobby when inspiration strikes.

Unfortunately, when you realize that the bulk of the people here are probably poor college kids or teenagers, it's not shocking that something costing over a hundred bucks is totally out of the question. The actual appreciation for art is another matter.

I wish you luck professionally, at least, as you've got more courage than I continuing through the industry.

I can understand how the industry might deter a few folks... It's not always a pretty place to be. Comics as an industry has been in shambles for quite some time. Doing freelance is risky business period, but I enjoy it, so I put up with all the crap. Nothing wrong with keeping it as a hobby either, if you enjoy it, just make sure you find the time to do it every now and then.

True, poor college kids aren't exactly my audience, since they're... well, poor. Post college is definitely where most of the business is coming from. I haven't had anyone e-mail me yet that's under 25.

I appreciate your words of encouragement, although I'm not so sure it's about courage anymore. I think it might be more stubborness than anything at this point. I've been doing this for 6 years now, I'm not about to change careers, haha.
