Can Wood elf beastlord & Froglok monk select starting city?Follow

As a gold subscriber can you choose Gfay (WE bst) and Rathe (Froggy) or are you stuck with Crescent Reach?

When they implemented the two new combos you were stuck with CR. I'm not a gold sub at the moment, but am curious if this was fixed (seeing as it has been months).

Non-gold subs are stuck with Crescent Reach for starting city of all new characters last time I tried (for those not aware of that restriction).

Hi Snailish,
I had a free slot on my shammy's account so I tried both options creating level one non heroic character- on a gold/all access account:

The Wood Elf- Beastlord shows only one deity available:Tunare and shows only CR as the starting city option.

The Froglok-Monk shows 2 deity's available :Quellious and Mithaniel Marr. But no matter which deity I select there is still only CR as the starting city option.

Sadly, I'm not surprised it wasn't fixed as yet. Smiley: oyvey

When these first came out, I chose Wood Elf Beastlord (with tree pet) as my heroic character. There was limited time for this free heroic character; I hurried. But this was my only choice. I expected to be in Greater Fey. But NO.

I tried the /set start city change (or whatever it is) and was unable to change.

I /petitioned. This is the reply:

Note that there is not even a HINT that there is an omission or error or thought of change. However, the staff who reply to /petition is not necessarily connected to the staff who program. There is also a rather long thread on Sony forums about this. This thread started as an into to the class, passed through objection to the tree pet and ended with complaint of home city of Crescent Reach only. There are other threads on the topic also.

Considering they put monk trainers in Rathe (at least I thought I read this in a patch note) this has to be (in my view) one of those nonpriority fixes. Too bad as starting city setting is one option that has made me sub gold in the past. I personally dislike origining to CR that much (that I would pay for a month's sub to roll new characters), and for monk and beastlord origin is very useful.

Whats odd is they added a BST trainer in Gfay for the Woodelf beastlords although as far as I know there are no spell merchants. You can even talk to her and hear a backstory on how she became a BST. She is out from orc ramp I think.

Its probably on the proverbial back burner with all the developer time loaned out to EQNext and other SOE projects atm....

Only good thing is that by putting in the trainers in the GFay and Rathe they at least have the intent to do it ......................someday !

See this is where developer (pretend) me would take a shortcut of sorts:

I'd align the wood elf beast with the druid guild, and just add bst to that armor line.

Frogs is trickier (sort of) but I don't have a problem giving them the frog wiz cloth armor as their newb set...



This thought occurred to me ages ago when there was hope of new Iksar classes. I envisioned Iksar clerics working for the shaman guild as a priest class and either getting to do a turn in to switch the armor to cleric plate, or they get their armor from the warrior questline. It's newb armor that is pretty general for stats so it's not that horrible to do this way (vs. coding in every new combination with full sets).

Ideally, (to me) they would allow all the appropriate classes to use all the plate armors (for example) and remove the racial/deity restrictions. It's not true cultural armor... if I do the faction on a human to quest for the Cabilis SK guild why not let me wear their newb armor? Due to the weird itemization of it all this would actually encourage progression types to mix and match for stats (especially on a new prog server).

I admit this is letting go of the large races/large armor thing, but that was given up ages ago by the devs. I'm sure a halfling could get an ogre tunic altered down with some tailoring in real (fantasy) life...


btw.... 2k posts for me with this one, nearly all on EQ threads. Probably about half of them on quests/items. Took years... not as proflic as the multistarred folk lol.

Sounds good to me. Iksars were not plate users originally. An Iksar Cleric would fit into the Warrior line of armour perfectly. Newbie armor, then adding Clerics to the Trooper Scale line of armour.

I would love to see Iksar Clerics! My Warrior still has a full set of Trooper Scale in his bank ready to be loaned out to a new Cleric! Hope reigns eternal!

As far as I know, this was intentional. They didn't want to go back and add all the newbie quests into Kelethin and Rathe, so they restricted them to Crescent Reach only, which already had the quests in place. Plus, if you don't want to hunt there, it takes all of 5 minutes to run to your preferred starting zone.

On one hand It's more of a roleplay/immersiveness thing for me I suppose.

My biggest gameplay issue with Crescent Reach as a default starting city is that it is not the most convenient thing for non-gaters. You origin (or homecity) spawn on the left side of the zone. So then you run through the city to get to the far right zoneline to get to the PoK book in Blightfire (which at least they had the decency to move from the dangerous middle of the zone). So it gets annoying on low-level slow moving characters.

Compare this to Rathe (froglok homecity except for monks) which has banks, merchants and PoK book in a very tight area. If it was possible... I would choose to ally many of my characters with the frogs and set Rathe as my home default city. GFay is also a great starting area if your not evil.... Again, as a gater just set bind and no big deal.

I really don't think it's that much work to add the class vendors. As far as newbie quests... it took them 2+ years to get the froglok SK one working. So I suppose it depends on whether they intend to do future progression servers, and whether wood elf beastlords are going to be available at Luclin or not... as that is the people who would really want the newbie armor. They could always make the Druid wood elf newbie armor bst usuable... that's not a lot of coding work. So I think there is workarounds.

If the new combos aren't going to be open until a much later expac (doesn't match how they added other combos in the past such as halfling + gnome extra classes but whatever) then the lack of oldschool newbie quests in the "correct" starting cities wouldn't matter.

2. Do noob starter quests (meet all the npcs in the round cave and do quests; takes maybe 10 minutes)
3. Get SoW clicky stick.

^True enough.

By SoW pots and/or gate potions... and so on. As far as the actual gameplay it's not a tough thing to deal with. I'd still prefer the option to set home city though.

I think ultimately it's the lore of my characters story that makes me care about it and I just like the convenience arguments to build my case. Before Crescent Reach you started (within the narrowly defined and not always fully inclusive of logic) at the race/deity/city location that made the most storyline sense, at least to the original dev vision. Half-elves for example have some interesting options if you start messing around with deity on some of the class choices.

I don't despise Crescent Reach or even the idea of it. I would have put the PoK book much closer to the origin spawn point (between it and the city gate maybe) rather than in Blightfire for the Crescent Reach PoK stone. I also would have put a PoK stone just inside the Goru'Kar Mesa zoneline to Blightfire (or just outside of the centaur camp in the middle of Blightfire), providing much better low-level fast access to the core content of that lowbie expac.

Could be worse. On occasion, my Dwarf Paladin has to use origin to get out of someplace. It's good for nostalgia, but I wouldn't recommend the trip very often.
